The fuss over this line is ridiculous. Yes the line itself is an absolute, but what the line is saying is that the Sith DEAL in absolutes. The Jedi have absolute rules too, but when the rules are broken the Jedi will use reason and deal with the issue accordingly. The Sith DEAL in absolutes, meaning you break the rule you die kind of stuff. And when Anakin said, "If you're not with me, then you are my enemy" it is saying Anakin won't reason with Obi-wan, he is just going to kill him. He is dealing in absolutes.

The irony of the line is actually one of the most intriguing things about it.

"Only a Sith deals in absolutes," Obi-Wan, the spokesperson for the remaining Jedi, says to the newly turned Darth Vader during their climactic duel as he brings to light not just Anakin's failings, but the Jedi's as well. If the Jedi Order wasn't so "absolute" in their dealings within and outside of the Council ("He's to dangerous to be left alive" - Mace Windu) maybe they wouldn't have been so blind to or victimized by Sidious' rising power.

The Sith are evil, but in some ways the Jedi were no less corrupt.

My computer was being stupid and wouldn't let me edit my above post, but also worth noting is that Windu's line that I included above is a very deliberate echo of Palpatine's "He was too dangerous to be kept alive" earlier in the film. Just more layers. Two sides of the same coin, if you will.

bstnsx704 That is a very interesting way to look at it. You may have changed my opinion.

I imagine the line is knowingly ironic. I imagine it's a saying or a quotation, an ironic truism in common parlance, at least among Jedi. I mean, it can't just be crap dialogue can it?

    Yes it can.

It's a contender for the worst line in the SW saga, and that's saying something.

I didn't have a chance to correct him on his spelling and punctuation!
