Kevin glanced over at his friend. "If we die, Barnabus is dead as well. So let's not die," he said wryly, and only half joking. He wished that had a good team put in here...a few more good old fashioned Hegemony Army Rangers, a squad of some of the increasingly rare former SAS men. Right, he thought. And while I'm at it, why not ask for the entire PI to be gone, the Wars hadn't happened, and I knew where on this god-forsaken planet my parents are.

He slipped the ammo clip out of his rifle...he didn't trust the virtual reader. The grizzled sergeant, Nikolsen, had always said, "Machines break. Eye's don't. Neither do I." It was a code that Kevin still struggeled to live by, nearly a decade later. Nikolsen's ages old joke never failed to put a smile on his face. Over the years, his smile had grown less wide, and smaller as the truths of what it meant sunk in. It still managed to make him smirk, though.

He shook his head, and rammed the full clip back into the rifle, harder than he needed to, and was rewarded by the sharp crack echoing around the now deserted chamber. He pulled back the bolt, and flipped up the small targeting reticle. He flipped his radio over to the Underground combat channel.

"Lock and load, people. As soon as we get word that Leader's away, make a break for it. Won't do any of us any good to stay and get killed.

Ashton looked ahead as Waterloo's face disappeared from the glowbox, the message to them had ended. The first emotion that came to mind was that of excitement - the Chief of State had just told them they had unlimited resources to commence the hunt for and elimination of Iscariot. He mulled over the possibilities of using the military in the capacity of aiding in the completion of their assignment.

He then thought of Waterloo's statement about how they should be very well versed in each others' personalities and dossiers in order to work together effectively. Stanovich had of course studied up on whatever material there had been available on the other three men seated with him. However since the best way to get to know someone was when you went on an assignment with them, he figured he would wait before making any personality judgements.

Ashton opened a folder on his lap. Inside was a sheet of information about the infamous Underground and sparse details on Barnabus Iscariot. He found the name ammusing, and said aloud.

"Isn't it funny the man has the first name of a Christian saint and the surname of one of the most celebrated traitors in ancient history?"

    Location: Streets

Eva stomped the accelerator and the car screeched before rushing forward and away from the raided building. The vehicle skimmed up the filthy alley way and out to main road after a tight curve. They passed by running people and empty streets until they reached the highway.

Once they were far enough to be out of immediate danger, Eva breathed easy.

"What were you doing here, anyway?" Kareena asked, frowning as her mind came back to her. "Where were you at the meeting? I don't remember seeing you," she noted.

?That?s a good question,? answered the older woman, rolling up the glass window and keeping her eyes on the road. ?I think I could ask you the same one.?

A police squad passed them by on the opposite direction, and Eva watched them disappear into the distance in the review mirror. That squad was probably headed to the hide out to back up the other one.

?Looks like Barnabus?s in pretty deep this time. What was he thinking? Dragging the meeting this close to morning?? she murmured, more to herself than her friend.

?I decided to leave early,? she continued, to answer Kareena?s questions. ?I stayed at the back, close to the exit. I had one of my gut feelings I would need to go in a hurry. And good thing I did. You could have been arrested. Shouldn?t you be home by now??

Doc heard gunfire coming in over the radio. He shook his head and turned on his mike.

"Dev, we ain't going anywhere. And neither are you, by the look of things. C I here trip-shraped the doors. Get away from the main doors, repeat, clear the main doors!" Kevin shook his head. The man was seven years younger than him; after what he had seen and experienced, Kevin felt it was more like thirty. Devon was still young, they all were, but he was the youngest. From what Kevin had seen in the kid's file when he was transferred to Doc's unofficial team to cover the rally. He looked over to his Russian friend.

"Jehk, how much time do we have before those tube-addicted baton happy counter-rioters get here?" Jehkyl was truly a genius when it came to technology. Kevin was willing to bet that if he didn't have a tracking system set up, he had some sort of formula for locating them based on when the alarm went off, and how fast an average unit could travel.

Jeffery Standpole was looking for advancement. He had been in the Publika Imperial peace keeping public police force for over 9 months now, and he was certain that he was not getting the respect that his valiant and brilliant actions warranted. In fact, Jeffery Standpole was not getting noticed at all. Not one to complain about such things, Jeffery Standpole took it upon himself to catch some note worthy criminals.

And so it stood, that when Jeffery Standpole was exiting his favorite coffee shop at precisely six-thirty two A.M.?as was routine every morning?the extra alert and ever vigilante Jeffery Standpole was passed by a speeding car. With a rather reluctant sigh?accompanied by some ?choice? words concerning the unfairness of the universe?Jeffery Standpole gave chase to what he perceived to be a normal car, on a normal journey, on a normal day, in a normal city.

He could not have been more wrong. Of course, it would not be until he pulled the car over, spoke to the driver, ran her identichip in the database and read the recently put out APB, that Jeffery Standpole would realize that he was?yet again?mistaken.

First things first, Jeffery Standpole would have to pull that woman over. And of course, before that could happen, he would need to turn on his police lights, and call in the chase. So it was that, precisely thirty seconds after she had passed ?Commercial Coffee Inc.?, Eva de la Cruz saw flashing lights in her rearview mirror.

Soon after the alarms had started, the predictable group of soldiers came bursting through the doors. The majority of the first wave fell prey to the ingenious traps and security measures, as well as the volley of lucky shots. Had the first wave been the only wave, it would have been a decidedly good day for Barnabus Iscariot, and the rebellion.

Unfortunately, it was a bad day for Barnabus Iscariot, and the rebellion. Cutting through the haze with brutal efficiency came the second wave. Many foot soldiers were felled by the stun blasts, and consequently handcuffed and taken away. One such foot soldier was Elisha Denthar. As soon as she was knocked unconscious and tied up, Elisha was taken to the P.I. counterterrorism office, and interrogated. During that interrogation, she was asked a couple of offensive questions.

The day turned out to not be a complete disaster, at least for Barnabus Iscariot. Hustled out of the dank room rather quickly by his escort team, the leader was soon back in business at his underground hideout. Using his un-traceable phone, Iscariot sent a text message to some key players in the rebellion (most of which were able to get out unscathed, and were now huddled in a safe house, underground), requesting their presence at a dinner, that very night.

It was an unusually normal day for Mariana Trujillo, as she followed her usually route to her place of employment. Arriving at the corner of Seventh and Liberty, Mariana found to her dismay that the block to her work was under construction, and that she would have to walk around the entire block to enter from the other side. Unassumingly, Mariana started on the extra trek, only to see a ruckus down the street. Having no other option, Mariana walked past the building, and tried to ignore all of the police cars outside. Much to her dismay (for the second time in the last four minutes), a crowd of rather rough looking hooligans came flooding out of the building she was passing, and the sheer strength of numbers forced the unassuming civilian down the street, and into the safe house that the crowd quickly funneled in to. Again, much (much much more, this time) to her dismay, Mariana saw the door locked behind her as a dim light was turned on. Shyly she turned around, and peered into the faces of the rebellion.

With a sigh, Mariana realized that she would be late for work.

Kareena smoothed her hair and forced down her fear so it looked for all intents and purposes like she was as respectable as ever, then answered her friend, "Yeah, I should, but the way he talked," she shook her head, a brilliant smile filling her face.

"I really felt we all had a chance to bring back the world of yesterday. I felt like we could once again have freedom, the choice of who and what we wanted to worship! It sounded like we could reintroduce a chance to learn. Not just what the government wishes, but what you do as well!" Kareena exclaimed. Grinning, she said simply, "The man has a golden tounge."

Then, as they were just past the coffee shop, Kareena realized with many explecitives, that they were being chased.

"We have to pull over," she whispered frantically, "otherwise we'd look even more suspicious."

Pasting a smile on, she greeted the man, "Hello, Officer. Is there a problem?" Her voice was appealing and friendly, but once he figured out who Eva was, Kareena knew it would be a problem.

After the briefing it was brought to the notice of the men present that a large rebel protest had taken place and their forces had captured several activists. Wolf saw this as an invaluable opportunity to gain intel on his future target and had decided to interrogate one personally.

As wolf had walked into the holding station, being questioned several times over his clearance, yet his high clearance and total lack on any record illustrated to all who he was, black op's...an assassin and as such someone who didnt exist and shouldn't be interfered with. The door opened and he stepped inside, the young woman infront of him was young and strikingly attractive, with dark hair and a defiance that radiated from her face....the annonymous assassin sat down opposite her. He slowly read through the file opposite him "Elisha Denthar...im lead to believe" he started, his voice eerily flat through the whole process. "i think you have some information you would like to pass to me" as he spoke a long thin blade protruded from a knuckle, the future pain it might inflict evident from casual openess with which the assassin held it.

Turning around, Mariana wasn't sure what to think. There were people in here. Were they dangerous? Friendly? Should she be scared? Questions raced through her mind. The woman was tempted to scream so that someone may hear her outside. She had no idea if it would help or maybe it would provoke the others in the room.

Taking a deep breath, Mariana opened her mouth but nothing came out. Taking another breath and coaching herself mentally, her mouth opened.

"Can someone tell me what is going on?"

OOC: Arc and I have worked up an entire plan for our escape, so if something seems out of place here...its not.

    IC: Doc

Doc grimaced at the wave of police officers charging down the main causeway. The shrapnel mines wouldn't do a thing to stop them. He looked around desperately, looking for a way to escape without the police wondering where they'd gone. A tone sounded on his radio...he had a text message. He quickly read it and sighed with relief.

He looked over at Jehkyl. "Do you have enough explosives to cave this place in? We can escape out the back door and follow Barnabus' path to the safehouse. The officers won't be able to follow, and they won't have an ID on us."

He looked around the room again.

    "And where's Dev?"

OOC: The first bit is in response to the earlier question from D_M, just to clear up confusion

    IC: Jehkyl Eiras

Jehkyl opened his mouth to say '-4 minutes. They're running behind' but instead was gripped with euphoria from the shrapnel mines explosion. He, Doc and the rest of the underground's militia fired wildy into the causeway dropping more officers in a hail of lucky shots.

All was still for a few seconds, except for the moans of injured riot guards. Jehk's face broke into a smile as he realized that they had won! The victory was short-lived however, as the second wave came barreling through the destroyed doorway, firing stun blasts into their ranks with brutal effeciancy.

"Do you have enough explosives to cave this place in? We can escape out the back door and follow Barnabus' path to the safehouse. The officers won't be able to follow, and they won't have an ID on us." Doc said as he scanned the room "And where's Dev?"

Jehkyl's smile had never faltered, he was thinking the same thing. He had already placed demo charges for maximum effect. All he had to do was press the button but he had a better, and more fun, plan.

The other question sank in. Where was Dev? His PDA picked him up outside in a promenant sniping position on the roof of an adjacent building.

"Dev is safe." He said, still wearing his micheivious grin "And I have more than enough demo charges here to level the building and everyone in it! Follow me, I have a plan!"

He then threw himself toward the passage to the back door, typing frantically on his PDA as he went and hoping that Doc was still in tow.

Doc slipped into position behind his friend...knowing the Russian, things would get very messy, very fast...at least for the officers, anyway. He jogged backwards, keeping an eye on the door. He was running over a mental checklist, and turned around to face Jehkly.

"Hey, Crazy I, I need to stop off at the intersection of 5th and Waterloo...can you get us there? I need five minutes, then we can go."

Doc slipped around the Russian, and shoulder-charged the concealed door.

    IC: Elisha Denthar

As her eyes fluttered open Elisha became aware that she was no longer running through the streets with her fellow rebels. Her vision slowly came back to her, though the perimeter of her sight still remained hazy. She shook her head, wincing as the pounding became worse. Out of habit she tried to reach up, but as she did so she discovered that her hands were bound, and as she looked down, she saw her feet were as well. ?Great,? she thought to herself.

Elisha hoped that no one else had been captured, but she knew that if they were able to capture her, others were to face the same fate. She hung her head, and as she looked down she was thankful to see that she didn?t appear hurt. She only had the incessant pounding in her head. She knew she had been knocked unconscious, but she wasn?t sure how.

    Not that it mattered.

The soft creak of the door told her that someone had entered and she looked up. A man who looked to be older than her had entered in the room. She didn?t speak, she just stared at him for a brief moment before turning her eyes from him. He was going to question her, she knew that, but the only thing that mattered to her at the moment was how she was going to escape from here with her life.

She didn?t like the look of the man, and as his hazel eyes scanned over the file she was sure concerned her, she took a deep breath, preparing herself for what was about to come.

?Elisha Denthar...im lead to believe. i think you have some information you would like to pass to me"

She let a small smile creep onto her face and she directed her blue eyes at him. Of course they knew who she was. She had been taking out their best men. Her smile flickered for a mere second, and her face was suddenly expressionless. ?You know my name,? she said, ?but that?s all you will know. I have nothing to tell you.?

?You know my name,? she said, ?but that?s all you will know. I have nothing to tell you". Wolf's face creased into the ghost of a smile before his eyes went back to the file, "You are going to be charged with murder, treason, blasphemy and a host of other charges that are serious to say the least" he began as he settled back in his chair, his face expressionless as he watched her, reading her body language. "Needless to say these charges carry the death penalty" he said and waited allowing what he said to sink in "However...if you would care to furnish me with information on a man by the name of Barnabus Iscariot" he said as he read from the file. "I will decide if we can come to an arrangement that doesn't involve your imminant death".

Elisha looked at the man across from her, noticing the faintest smile touch his stone cold features. She had a feeling that he was used when they needed something badly. To anyone else he might have been someone to fear, but what did Elisha care anymore? She had no family. The Publika made sure of that.

She titled her face, the angle at which it rested allowing her to gaze at him out of the corner of her left eye. She knew that she was going to be facing an array of charges, but which of them could they really prove? This was the first time that she had ever been caught, and she had never left any sufficient evidence behind to prove that she had been guilty of anything. The only thing they really had against her was the fact that she did have ties to the Underground.

"You are going to be charged with murder, treason, blasphemy and a host of other charges that are serious to say the least"

Elisha smiled in spite of herself. She was certain that they wouldn?t be able to prove she had committed murder, but the charges of treason would hold. She knew that if anything would hold it would be the charges of treason. But what she and the Publika considered treason were two very different things. How could she be committing treason when she never believed in their ways in the first palce?

"Needless to say these charges carry the death penalty"

Of course they were, she thought. How could she be given anything less? She was directly opposing them, and she knew that the consequences of her actions would lead to this if she were to get caught. She had never believed that she would get caught this early on though. She had to admit that she was slightly disappointed in herself. She turned her face again, her blue eyes boring into the man sitting before her, ?I would much rather face death,? she said, ?Then the life that your precious government has set out for us.?

"However...if you would care to furnish me with information on a man by the name of Barnabus Iscariot" he said as he read from the file. "I will decide if we can come to an arrangement that doesn't involve your imminant death".

Elisha averted her gaze for a mere second before looking back to him. She hadn?t a clue who he was, and as her gaze lingered she realized that she never seen him on the field, in combat or even on the streets. Give up information on Iscariot? She wouldn?t. There was no way. Betraying him was betraying the Underground. Everything she believed in, and everything her mother fought for.

She remained silent, her mind racing with possible ways to get out of the precarious situation she found herself in. What if she gave false information? Surely they were going to either imprison her or kill her anyway, leading them in the wring direction may be the only thing she could do.

?What is it you think I know?? she asked, her voice resonating within the empty room.

Doc carefully attached a piece of paper onto the front of the podium, standing once again. He re-read the list carefully, and grinned in satisfaction. He read over it one last time.

To those who shall read this note: the Underground welcomes you. By the time you read this, we will have left by a concealed tube, and the doors will be closing...please mind the gap.

You have wasted five seconds getting this far in this. You have 50 seconds remaining.

This site is now a closed Underground Installation. We kindly advise you to leave before the defenses are activated, as the day janitor is tired of cleaning up blood and headless bodies in riot gear.

You wasted ten seconds getting this far...you have 40 seconds to leave.

    ---Note to self:

Pick up eggs, milk, and cheese on the way home.

    30 seconds. Have a nice day. :D

Best of Regards, Luck, and TV induced contented lethargy to all of you,
The two craziest Underground commandos to walk around.

This note was a presentation of the number 42.

    20 seconds.

Doc grinned and called Jehkyl over. "Dude, you have to read this...I oughta have copies made up, ya know?" Doc continued smirking at his handiwork...utterly random, and vaugely threatening...perfect.

After a few minutes of fierce scribbling, Doc called him over. "Dude, you have to read this...I oughta have copies made up, ya know?"

Jehk's eyes flicked over the note, His smile renewing vigor with every word. He remembered why he liked Doc so much. "Most excellent comrade! They vill not see this coming, either."

He attached a silk-thin tripwire string to the note that lead to a shrapnel mine in the podium set to go off 60 seconds. He had also programmed the mine's microchip to emit a signal, right before it explodes, to trigger the demo charge's timers for 90 seconds, also.

They could hear the sounds of the police as they fought their way through to the back room. Doc had already gone to the tunnels and was halfway down the ladder into their escape network. He pulled a microfilm camera out of one of his many trenchcoat pockets and snapped a picture of the "threat letter". 'Barny will enjoy this' he thought.

He then spun on his heel and sprinted to the tunnels; the marvelous joke would all be ruined if they saw the tunnel instead of the note. Jumping down into the hole, almost on top of Doc, he closed the tunnel's trapdoor at the same time he heard the officers enter the room. He and Doc didn't wait around for the explosion, as much as he would of liked to, but instead began to make their way to the corner of 5th and Waterloo, and then back to the safe house.

This was made much easier by the tunnel security and tracking system Jehk had installed just a year earlier. All that a member of the rebellion had to do was ask for directions into the speakerbox underneath nearly every manhole in the city and the voice identification system turned on green lights at every correct intersection. Motion sensor beacons in the lights cut them off as the rebels pass, detering followers. They also activate the land mines in the tunnels, fool-proofing the system.

He stopped for a moment to admire his own genius before a tap on the shoulder from Doc reminded him of his task. His smiled again, this time wider than ever. Maybe this wasn't such a bad day for the rebellion after all!

Doc hurried along the concrete path, turning occasionally to check for followers, however unlikely they were. He stopped at a speakerbox.

"Code 0114J92/1138. Run a blue pattern to the cover closest to 5th and Waterloo...where it merges, put it as dark orange." Doc was muttering under his breath. "Bacon...Milk...Eggs...Bacon," echoed back to him. He also wanted to pick up a Spotted Tablet pizza for the team back at base...they needed a treat.

Doc remembered something about a few of them saying how they missed a few of the comforts of regular life. Take out food was at the top of the list. Usually they ate some of the food that Doc or one of the soldiers cooked...even though they had gagged at the sight of it, more times than not.

He turned off to follow the blue lights, idly wondering is Jehkyl was following. Not that it mattered...he was only going a block. He grabbed the duffel he had put there yesterday and grabbed the street clothes he kept on hand for times like these. He pulled on the gray jacket and pants, and climbed out of the manhole cover, and onto the street.

It was surprisingly quiet for rush hour. He looked at the masses pitifully...he wished the PI was overthrown soon. This was sad.

The atmosphere was changed instantly when he walked into Spotted Tablets. The place was noisy and brightly lit. Doc joined the queue, and looked around to see if he could spot a familiar face.

Jehkyl really had to think about following Meerkat to the pizzaria. What if the PI had gotten a picture or film of the two during the fight and were on the lookout for the "traitors"? He would hate to be killed, or worse locked away, without a good fight.

He checked his pockets for spare artifacts, finally uprooting his PDA, microcamera, 3 homemade frag grenades, 1 smoke grenade, a roll of extra tripwire, a pair of wirecutters, a pair of nightvision/infared glasses and a lavender scented candle. His fear subsided when he looked upon his creations, including the candle, and he scuttled off after Doc.

He shucked his rifle but kept everything else. He noticed Doc's discarded ranger clothes and climbed the ladder into the streets. He didn't pay much attention to the street or the restaurant, searching out Doc and taking up a place beside him. He smiled when Doc jumped as he put his hand on his shoulder. 'Good' he thought with a sigh 'Doc's still in "Ranger Mode". Nothing can sneak up on us now.'

It was a fact and he knew it. He had been on enough missions with the Ex Hegemony Ranger to know. So Jehk relaxed and waited for their turn at the counter.

    Carmine smiled at Stanovich's comment.

"It's fitting that he should live up to this namesake. Even more fitting that he should die as Judas did, which is our job."

Carmine had a sudden feeling that this boast would never become truth. It was a feeling he didn't like. The tall man blinked it away, and, as suddenly as it had arrived, it was gone.

"I have numerous leads on the Underground, but none on Escariot. I believe it to be in the Publika's best interests to get us a mole."

Sitting in a booth in the pizzaria I see Jehkyl and Doc standing in line. I wait for them to get their food and motion for them to come over.

Great to meet up with you guys again. How is the movement going??

Doc carefully balanced the stack of pizzas on his hand. He walked past Devon's table. "We can't attract attention. I'm heading back to the safehouse. You can follow, but make it look natural," he muttered out of the corner of his mouth, looking for all the world like a delivery boy late for his shift. He'd had plenty of practice when he forgot to help with server duties at the restaurant. He walked outside, looking for a place to slip back to the sewers unnoticed, idly wondering if his fellow freedom fighters were following.
