The Negative Effect 'Orange Is the New Black' is Having on Jails


Orange may be the new black, but one sheriff is making a statement that it's not cool to be a convict.
Because of the popularity of Netflix's "Orange Is the New Black," Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel is swapping out the orange for the old-school black-and-white stripes at his Michigan jail, USA Today reports.

"The name of the show, 'Orange is the New Black,' is saying it's cool to wear orange, and the show is enormously popular in Michigan," Federspiel said.
To add, Federspiel said with more of the public wearing orange, the change to black and white also avoids the possibility of confusion of who is an inmate and just a citizen, especially when inmates are being transported.
"We haven't had any escapes, and I don't want any escapes," Federspiel said.
Apparently, the inmates are not too happy with the change.
"They think it makes them look like criminals," he said

The above article brings up a good point, i.e. that more people out in public are wearing orange; I've especially seen bright orange shirts. Not sure why this trend started, but I've noticed it quite a bit - especially in the last year. Maybe because of the show?!

 

Trends based on prison attire always happen. First the baggy pants, now the orange. This sheriff is going to be disappointed next year when everyone is wearing black and white.

oh, right. on the plane in the s2 premiere. i didn't recognize her.

 

I have completely forgotten how season 2 resolved.

 

miss rosa hit vee with a van. alex was caught by her parole officer with a gun. i kind of forget where we were with piper, as her story kind of was pushed to the background.

 

Ah, yeah. It's all coming back.

It's out on early release. And away I go.

 

Unfortunately I can only stay up to watch the first episode. Fortunately it was great.

 

I'm locking my family in a closet tonight so I can have a few hours to myself for binge watching.

Heading over there in about a month. Someone over there keeps asking me to bring them Game of Thrones merchandise, as if there's a GOT store on Michigan avenue in Chicago. I've checked, and there isn't.
