Treyers barked orders down at the Sector Rangers HQ. "Alright, the man's down; I want a full bodyguard around him at all times, until he either dies or regains consciousness. We need him debriefed, so we can figure out who's behind this. Garrison, Iiles, Torny, get a crew down to that guy's offices and start questioning everybody. Pull the security holocards, everything; I want to know every person who has been in and out of that office for the past month. Kales, Lirik, find out who stands to gain the most from this guy's death; and then find out who stands to gain the most from that persons incarceration. I want every angle explored, immediately."

He then picked up his com and made a call, "Grenice, what's the status on the assailant?"

"Sistel followed her into a cantina. The surveillance geeks have a full 3D recording of the entire plaza for the past nine hours going; even if the assassin changes clothes, it won't be too hard to run her face through and match it up with someone else in the crowd."

"Great. I hate masters of disguise. Keep watching Sistel; make sure she doesn't get killed."

Cirani soon was out of her 'working' clothes, revealing her normal street clothes underneath. She stuffed the clothes, the boots, the gloves, the height extensions, and the helmet into a bag she had carried, and pushed them into the next stall, which was empty. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, she flushed the 'fresher and left the stall, acting as though she had been in there for the usual reasons.

She walked out of the refresher and over to the bar in the cantina. Sitting, she ordered herself a drink, content to stay put for a while.

There wasn't any way the Imperials would be able to recognize her as being the assassin, she knew. Any and all surveliance would show the assassin as being about 5 1/2 feet tall. Any other description of the assassin would describe the clothes she had just changed out of. She had had no skin, no hair showing.

Cirani sipped at her drink, blending in with the other patrons.

Aali saw nothing. No one that she could connect with the assassin. "Dammit," she muttered to herself, cursing her lack of speed.

She made her way to a corner booth and got out her comlink, trying to be discrete. "Captain Treyers? I lost her, sir. I can't find..." She stopped as an idea popped into her mind. "Hold on..."

She got up and headed to the restroom. Only one stall was in use. She quickly checked the others, and found a pile of black clothing in one of them. "Bingo!" She grinned to herself.

Picking up her comlink once again, she said, "Captain, I found the assassin's belongings in a 'fresher, sir. What would you like me to do with them?"

Kaios didn't have to look long. He found Macris quickly, or rather, the Ryn found him.
"Partner!" came a shout as Kai felt a hearty slap on his back. "Glad you could make it. Using your own ship, I see? Good thing you're not recognized on this planet. That could all change, of course, depending on how your assignments go..."
"Speaking of which," Kai interrupted, "Can I ask a favor of you when this is over?"
Macris raised an eyebrow. "We'll see, my friend. For now, though, here comes one of Sonny's men. He'll tell us what to do."

    Nar Shadda: Noon

Fitz one of Sonny's closest associates walked up to Kaios and Macris along with two Duro's, everyone exchanged handshakes.
Then Fitz pointed at Kaios and Macris. "Kaios, Macris, friends of mine. They are assigned to make sure you two are at the warehouse safely"
Then Fitz looked at Kaios and Macris and pointed at the two Duro's "Hem, and Kiffek the drivers. I want to talk to my friends, alone"
The two Duro's left, and Fitz pulled out two maps and showed them where they're going. "Okay those two Duro's are legit they think we are hauling expensive equipment that needs security backup. Make sure they go to the warehouse, if your followed but not attacked don't worry about it just get to the warehouse, but tell the guys at the entrance once your there. If you are attacked just call me not Sonny and I'll send you backup. Also Sonny and a couple of sub-leaders will be waiting." Fitz then walked away waved at the two Duro's entered the air speeder and flew off. The two Duro drivers entered there air freighters and flew off closely followed by Macris and Kaios.

TAG: Viceroy Rook (just a little info for your character Zarina for later on if Kaios ever asks her. The real reason why Sonny wanted Taine killed, is because he was making a power play for leadership and killing off all opposition, and Taine was seemingly that last opposition.)

OOC: Okay, thanks. Didja get that, Coota? If Rina gives Treyers any new info he might have his hands full for a long, long time... :D

Kaios allowed himself a small smile of satisfaction as he noted that all systems were functioning optimally.
"You're not trigger-happy or anything, are ya, partner?" Macris asked over a private channel. "If this is the first assignment of this sort you've done, you'd better be careful."
"Don't worry," Kai reassured the Ryn.
"So you won't blow targets out of the sky indiscriminately?"
"Isn't that the sort of thing Sonny would approve of?" Kaios retorted somewhat sarcastically.
"Not when it costs him credits," was Macris' unusually serious-sounding reply.
    Kaios was quiet. "Right."

OOC: BTW... I probably just forgot, but where exactly are these freighters headed--another location planetside, Nal Hutta, etc?

Treyers replied, "They're evidence, Sistel; bag them and tag them, then take 'em down to the lab for a full DNA scan. Skin particles, eyelashes, what have you, sweat, it usually ends up somewhere on clothes, and with the stuff we've got these days, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out who the assassin was, especially if she has a file. Though who the assassin was doesn't especially matter; I'm more interested in who hired her. I've placed some of my best men on the scene; they'll have the plaza cordoned off and the place scoured for evidence; they'll also take care of the witness interviews. I'll be there in a few minutes to pick you up; we're going to go meet up with my men on the surveillance job."

Sure enough, several dozen sector Rangers were spreading out across the plaza to the key places where the assassination attempt had taken place and cordoning them with police tape. The scientists would work as best they could to gather evidence, and the officers would get as many account as possible for the report. The important part of the investigation would start the next day.

"Yessir." Aali replaced her com and pulled several baggies of varying sizes from a pouch on her belt. After holographing the pile, she carefully placed every item in a bag and gave each on a little code.

She put the evidence in the bag she had over her shoulder and exited the restroom. After looking around the bar once more, she made a quick exit and went back to the scene of the crime.

"So we're headed for a warehouse in League territory, right?" Kai asked.
"Yep. Shouldn't be too much to worry about," Macris replied nonchalantly.
The first twenty minutes or so of the flight were uneventful. Kai, though, had the comlink in his headset tuned to a local news station.
"Hm. Sector Rangers are apparently moving around a lot. Sounds like a hit somewhere else."
"Good," Macris said. "That means the attention is off us for a little while."
"Yeah... too bad the warehouse is all the way on the other side of the planet."
"Don't be so pessimistic," Macris chided. "So... I wonder what our esteemed boss is doing. You think he ever gets his own hands dirty these days? From what I hear he can get bored with some of the less important work and all the operations he has to handle. And when he gets bored he gets mad. A hit of his own every now and then would probably clear his head."
"What does this have to do with anything?"
"Well, I figure if he has fun of his own every once in awhile it'd be safer for the rest of us; he probably wouldn't be so touchy all the time."
    "Maybe."
As they finished this particular line of conversation, Kaios noticed a few small ships tailing them. He had noticed them first when they'd taken off but only now noted the pattern they flew in.
"Sloppy," he muttered. "Macris! We have a tail."
"Relax; remember what Sonny's man said. Until they start doing anything openly hostile we're fine."
At this point Kai also noticed that there were no other ships around for kilometers. The small ships' pilots apparently noticed as well. Seconds later a laser blast flew past Kai's cockpit.
"So, is that hostile?" Kai asked.
"I like to think of it as a challenge," Macris said happily.
"What's going on?" one of the Duro pilots asked somewhat shakily over the public channel.
"We'll take care of it," Kaios sighed.

Cirani watched Aali come out of the 'fresher with the bag of clothes, look around, then leave. So, the Imperials had her clothes. So what? She had lots more similar to them.

There was a chance they'd find some of her DNA, but they had nothing to compare it to, except from the other assassinations she had done. They had never been able to finger her as the assassin in any of the jobs she'd done to this point.

Cirani downed the last of her drink. It was time to report in and go home.

She got up and left the cantina. She was pleased with herself. She only hoped her boss was too. There was but one loose end. Sho Joon had been taken to the medical facilities. Had the dart been in long enough to kill him?

She shook her head. It didn't matter. She would make sure he was dead, later. She would give it enough time to kill him if it was going to. Chances were that the poison in his system was enough to kill him eventually.

Cirani headed back towards Dew Claw HQ, wandering around to make sure nobody was following her before making her destination known.

Treyers hover car showed up within minutes; he stayed only long enough to have a quick talk with the officers on the scene and to pick up Sistel. As they flew towards the surveillance site, a call came through over their comm.

"Sir, the freighters are being attacked; what should we do?"

"Move the assault team and the fighters in. Aid the freighters, then pause them and board them. We'll be there in a minute."

Kaios and Macris both piloted customized light freighters, which meant that though they were significantly smaller and less heavily armored than the bulk freighters they escorted, they had military-grade weapons, sensors, and engines. They weren't having too much trouble small-time bandits who'd decided to attack, but a few minutes into the skirmish Macris noticed something on a screen of his that monitored air traffic within several hundred kilometers, thanks to sensor stations set up by the League that fed data to his ship.
    "Uh-oh," he said.
As he finished blasting a pair of atmospheric fighters out of the sky, Kaios groaned. "What now?"
"Unidentified ships inbound. More bandits, you think?"
"I don't know. You think we're that lucky?"
"Probably not," Macris sighed. Then, in a perkier tone, "This could get fun, though."
Kai snorted. "So how long do we have?"
    "Just a couple of minutes."
"Great; just lovely. Let's hurry up with these guys."
The only reason the fight was still going on was because two of the ships were light freighters similar to those piloted by Kai and Macris; they were piloted by clumsy people, that much was obvious, but they were still a threat.
"Hurry up!" one of the Duro pilots exclaimed. "We're taking a pounding here!" The Duro was exxagerating, of course, out of fear, but it did annoy Kaios that the enemy ships were getting as many shots past him and Macris as they were. They'd been having to dart back and forth and around to engage multiple ships at the same time, which wasn't necessarily hard, though it was less efficient than Kai would have liked. Now, though, the last of the small fighters were gone, and they could deal with the real trouble.
"One minute before those other ships are here," Macris notified him.
Kaios grunted a reply as the dogfight continued.

The Imperial Sector Ranger IRD-Advanced fighters swooped into the field of battle, broadcasting over general comm frequencies, "This is the Imperial Sector Rangers, fighter unit 5-9-0. Attention aggressors; heave to and disengage, or you will be destroyed. Freighters, you will move behind our defensive curtain and prepare for boarding. We are here to protect you."

The fighters swooped in fast and strafed the aggressors, zooming past Macris and Kaios's ships.

Treyers watched from the surveillance vessel a few kilometers off. He just hoped everything went as planned.

On hearing that the Imps were there to help, Kaios and Macris immediately switched on their visual links between their ships to exchange incredulous looks.
"I'm not one to complain with help, but..." Kai shrugged helplessly.
"For now, let's just comply," Macris sighed. "Don't wanna get shot out of the sky, and we might still get out of this cleanly..."
    "Let's hope so."

Sonny was in the warehouse office listening to the comm chatter, and overheard the Sector Ranger's orders. He was furious. He commed Kaios and Macris over a private channel.

Kai and Macris both flinched at Sonny's roar in their ears. Their vid channels were still open, so they looked at each other and both shrugged.
"This is freighter escort Happy Drunkard to Imperial Sector Rangers," Macris said over the comm. "We'd prefer that you not inspect anything until our associate arrives; he knows more about the shipment than we do; we're just flying as protection."

The Sector Rangers swung in hard and poured green fire into the aggressors; it only took a few moments for them to decide to run.

Treyers replied, "I'm sorry, you don't have that option. One of the great things about the Empire is you don't have the right to remain silent, you don't have the right to an attorney, and things you say can still be used against you in a court of law. It's a beautiful system. Heave to, stop your engines, and prepare for boarding in the next ten seconds. You'll notice the transports moving in right now. If you do not comply, we will have to use force."

IC:Macris blinked. He looked to Kai, who shrugged helplessly. The Zabrak was more comfortable in straightforward situations like gunfights. But he didn't think that they could go toe to toe with as many Imp ships as they were up against. Over the private channel he asked Macris,
    "Now what?"
"I, uh... this is Happy Drunkard to Imperial Sector Rangers... um... at least let us board the freighters first. We just don't want any of your men to get anything messy."
Kai cocked an eyebrow. "What was that?" he asked incredulously, over the private channel.
"This way," Macris replied over that same private channel, "maybe we can salvage the situation if they find anything; shooting men is easier to accomplish than blasting military-grade fighters out of the sky. And hey, maybe they won't find anything. I might be able to stall until Mithel gets here. Hey, Boss, are you still there? Any ideas? If you really want us to we might be able to hold on in a dogfight if you send reinforcements."
    Kaios' eyes widened in alarm.

The cargo bays were full of frelka fish, but Treyers hadn't expected anything less. It would have been stupid to run these ships through customs without hiding the spice somehow.

The captains of the escorts had boarded with the Major, who had arrived as soon as his fighters had secured the area. They seemed visibly nervous, which meant they weren't professional smugglers; for a professional smuggler, inspections were the usual routine. These guys looked like they were expecting to get caught.

Treyers, on the other hand, didn't want them to get caught. He had plans for them, and if they got caught, it would ruin them. Still, he had to make them think that even if he was an incompetent who couldn't find spice in front of his nose, that he really did want to find something.

"You see, Mr. Kaios, Mr. Macris, when a couple of completely innocent freighters supposedly full of a cargo that is almost worthless are attacked by a bunch of pirates, it makes me think the might have something illegal aboard. Of course, those hijackers might just like fish a lot. My men will run some scans, check crate by crate. If you're legit, we'll be out of your hair in no time."

Sonny replied "Tell that Ranger that those freighter's are protected by the Empire, being that they are equipment for the Navy. So, they have no right to peek into Navy business plus a man is coming down with a datapad of proof that these two freighters cannot be bothered by anyone even so-called Sector Rangers, unless he speaks to that IMPERIAL Admiral. Also tell that Ranger it is nothing new that pirates would see a freigher and try to take it, this is after all Nar Shadda. Also, I'm not sending reinforcement, it'll only make us look guilty. Don't you fire on them I don't want you dead, just keep stalling and Kaios keep quiet until Mithel gets there. "

    Sonny switched to Mithel.

    "Mithel are you there yet?

    "No sir."

"Get there quicker, or I'm going to have you shot."

((Ok, so it's electronics. One problem with that last message though, Theron; Treyers is already aboard one of the transports with a full scan team, while another full scan team is on the other transport. Unless Kaios has some kind of ear piece, there's no way for Sonny to be in contact with him. However, just for the sake of argument...))

Treyers noticed multiple Imperial seals on the cargo boxes containing a variety of electronic equipment. They weren't full scale seals, however, and therefore could be broken without code keys. That wasn't what worried him, however; what worried him is that this shipment of spice was obviously being protected by some Naval personnel, probably a high ranking one. To forstall any arguments, however, Treyers spoke up.

"It seems this ship is bringing in Fleet cargo. Before you raise any objections on that account, however, I would point out article 9, paragraph 7b, Imperial Law Code; 'Due to the possibility of abuse of Naval authority by civilians, all Fleet freight subcontractors are not designated as Naval vessels, but rather as civilian vessels. Therefore, they are under the jurisdiction of all Imperial Law Enforcement Agencies, and are subject to search and seizure under Imperial Law.'"

He pulled out a small datacard, tapped a few buttons, and brought up the aforementioned paragraph, then handed the datacard to Macris. "However, if everything is all legal here, which I'm sure it is, we shouldn't have to go through the whole seizure part. But just to be safe, we won't be allowing anyone else aboard these transports until we're done. It'll only take half an hour, at most."

Mithel just arrived, but the Sector Rangers were already onboard. He walked up to the Ranger who seemed to be in charge, The one talking to Macris and Kaios.

"I'm retired Line-Captain Mithel Draxx of the Imperial Navy, Who are you, what is your name and rank?"

    The Sector Ranger replied.

"Mr. Treyers my company is under contract to ship this equipment for Grand Admiral Takei (Coota your character should know he is a well known spice user), this equipment is secret and should not be scanned by anyone other than Imperial Intelligence officers."

Mithel gave Treyers a datapad basically explaining the freighters are protected by the Empire and only Imperial Intelligence or the ISB are allowed to randomly scan the cargo boxes since they are property of the military. Any question concerning the cargo should be forward to Admiral Kerrik or Admiral Ursla (Coota one of the admirals is corrupt (Kerrik) and the other thinks he is shipping equipment (Ursla).)

"So, Mr. Treyers I see no Imperial Intelligence agent here or an ISB agent here, you can search the freighters all you want but you cannot touch or even scan the contents of the cargo. So do your search but don't touch my cargo."

Mithel stared at Treyers with no expression on his face, but Mithel was sizing Treyers up. Mithel was figureing out what kind of opponent this Treyers could be. Then he looked at the other Rangers as they searched the freighters, feeling them all out trying to figure out the weak from the strong.

((Um, I posted above that I wasn't letting anyone aboard. But I'll allow it))

    Treyers smiled sweetly.

"Actually, luckily for the Empire, I just so happen to have an ISB agent onboard. You see, the Empire is truly worried about the political reliability of such great institutions as the Imperial Sector Rangers and the Navy, so we've all got Imperial Security Bureau guys looking over our shoulders these days. Of course, since you're retired, I wouldn't expect you to know that. Lieutenant Quilane, I'm sure you'd love to meet Mr. Mithel here."

A lieutenant dressed in the uniform of the Rangers stepped forward, pulling out a badge and flashing it; sure enough, ISB.

"I'm sorry, sir," the ISB agent said deferentially, "But as long as I'm here, the Major has authority to search."

"Luckily," Treyers interjected, "We're already done. We're fast workers, and you're a slow driver. I'm sure there's something illegal here, but nothing too much to bother us. We're after the big fish, and this is a herring."

Treyers grinned again and motioned to his men. "Alright, let's pack it up and move it out, people!"

He turned back to Mithel, extended a hand and shook that of the ex-Imperial soldier.

"Nice to meet you, sir. I'm sure I'll be seeing you."

Kaios wasn't used to all this innuendo and on-the-edge, back-and-forth dialogue; he wasn't used to having to talk much, period. So he was glad that Sonny had bid him to remain silent. When the Sector Rangers finally left, he blinked several times. He and Macris looked at each other and shrugged.
"So," Macris said uneasily, "that wasn't so bad, was it?" He gave a half-hearted smile.
"Then why do I have a bad feeling about this?" Kai snorted.
"I don't know... never had to actually deal with that head Ranger, what was his name?"
    "Treyers."
"Right, Treyers. And in my earlier days in the League the Rangers hadn't set up shop yet, either."
    "How old are you, anyway?"
"That's beside the point. My point is that these Rangers aren't what I expected."
"And my point," Kai sighed, "is that Sonny probably won't be too happy about this."
"Why not? We got off without too much trouble."
Kai shrugged. "Well, looks like our Boss is going to be busy soon, trying to find our rat."
"He just had to have Imperial connections, didn't he? Well, on the other hand, maybe that's what got us out of this."
Then they looked to Mithel, who had been glaring at the leaving Rangers, and muttering curses under his breath. Macris gulped nervously; Kai looked at the floor. Besides the implications of almost having screwed up royally, he had a sinking feeling in the back of his mind that not everything was what it seemed. He'd have to take a look around the ship later.
