Ok, the title is self explanitory: where did the word Jedi come from? I invite speculation or definite answers, both in the SW universe, and where GL got the word. On your mark, get set, crank out some ideas, people!

I thought there was a Japanese word that was reminiscent of Jedi?

I know Lucas was influenced by Frank Herbert's DUNE. In the book, there is a planet named Giedi Prime, which I always thought looked similar to "Jedi."

Good question, here is what I found

Lucas said in an interview that he was inspired by a Jidai Geki (samurai-era soap opera) on TV during a visit to Japan

    thats where I found it.

Interesting. But then how did the Jedi order come to name themselves?Forget for a moment that GL exists; if SW was happening, how did the term "Jedi" (and "Sith" for that matter) come to be?

the Sith took their name from the alien race of the same name that sheltered the dark jedi exiled from the Order

... so the story goes. But didn't those backstories come out afterwards? Anyway, the question still remains why sith was chosen for that alien race...

"JEDIDIAH" is a name that signifies or is derived from: "beloved of the Lord", "the four letters", "be", "become".

In Haitian Creole, jedi means Thursday.

I don't know about Jedi, but I heard that "Sith" was sort of a George Lucas joke. They are really bad, right, so move the last letter "h" to the second position and you get "sh-t". The word was first used on Star Wars merchandise before it was mentioned in the films; the first time I saw it was on the original Blue Series Star Wars trading cards in 1977, it had a picture of Darth Vader and said "Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith", change the letter and it is pretty funny.

GL loves samurai films. In Japan, samurai films are "jidai geki," or "period" films, as "jidai" means "period" (e.g. "Meiji jidai" = "Meiji period."
