I know you can't spoil anything about Star Wars for me, but I'm curious about the art of secret-keeping on a production like this. For example, when you signed on, did they even tell you that the movie was titled The Force Awakens?
I don't think they really knew the title for a long time … or if they did, it was kept under wraps. You know what? I think I learned it when everybody else did, when it was announced. With bigger movies like this, there are so many moving parts, so many marketing ideas, that they obviously don't want those things preempted by someone speaking out of turn and saying something they shouldn't have. People are so hungry for information and content that it's just easier when you don't tell people that much. Even something small you might say could get misconstrued! For example, someone asked me if I was interested in working with Rian Johnson, who's directing the next Star Wars movie, and I said, "Sure, I'd like to work with him" … and then people reported that I'll be in that movie. And I have no idea! I don't even know if I'm gonna be in this one. All I know is that I'm in the trailer. [Laughs.]
It's interesting that in Ex Machina, Domhnall Gleeson's character arrives at this mysterious compound and has information doled out to him in a very cagey, need-to-know basis. I would think that's analogous to meeting with J.J. Abrams on a project as secretive as Star Wars.
It's a bit like that, yeah. You meet and you talk, over the next week or two, people figure it out, and then it either happens or doesn't.
And then do they tell you the character's name and all the important plot details?
I knew that in my first talk with J.J., actually. He basically told me the whole thing, the whole story. It was incredibly exciting just to be called in and told that. It was awesome.
Both Ex Machina and Star Wars are effects-heavy movies, but at least in Ex Machina, those effects are so well-integrated that you don't even notice them. The parts of Alicia's body that are replaced by technology in postproduction look utterly convincing.
It's stunning. And the positive side of technology is that what they're able to do with it nowadays is amazing, because it doesn't get in the way of shooting. Alicia could just be in her mesh suit and we could do all the scenes, they'd do one pass without us, and that was it … although it does feel to me that with other movies, there's such an overreliance on digitally creating things, and you can still tell that it's not real when you overuse it so much. What's great is when those effects are used in a more subtle way, and I think in Ex Machina in particular, it's sometimes incidental. The camera isn't even presenting those effects, it's just catching glimpses of things, and it's done in such a sophisticated way that I find it's very believable.
And I hear that's similar to the new Star Wars film, which goes heavy on practical effects instead of computer graphics.
Same thing! It was very much like that. Yeah, there would be some blue-screens here and there, but for the most part, I interacted with full sets and everything. It was great.

When you were making this movie, had you been cast in Star Wars?
No.
Watching the movie as a Star Wars fan, I was like the fact that two characters from that movie are talking about Star Trek was kind of fun.
[Laughs] No, we hadn’t been cast yet.
Now we know you’re a big Star Wars fan, I’m a fan, J.J. Abrams a fan. When you step on that set, does it dawn on you of the importance of that? “I’m making the seventh episode of Star Wars and this will liveforever?” That kind of thing?
You totally fan out and geek out when it first happens and the moments when you arrive on set and are like “Holy ****.” But then you have to get to the meat of what you’re doing. Sure it can be a little difficult and there’s a lot of moving parts of figuring out where you fit into that thing is challenging but no, at a certain point you have to put those…
Expectations away?
Yeah but that goes with anything. If you’re already into the result you’re dead in the water.
Lots of those expectations come from online rumors. Do you go online and read those?
I’ve read a couple of them. You get excited. “What are they saying?,” you know?
I know you can’t say specifically, but do the actors know what’s going to happen to their characters if and when they go on past The Force Awakens?
Ah, I couldn’t speak to that. I don’t even know. I think generally, watching the trailer was my only confirmation that I even was going to be in this one so I have no idea. I know that people thought I was saying I was going to be in the next one which is not true. I was asked if I was excited to work with Rian Johnson. I mean of course I would. I’d be excited to work with him. I have no confirmation whether I will or not.

But as character arc thing, do you think about what might happen later?
Sure. Yeah, of course I have thoughts about what happened before, what happens now and what happens later, if anything.
With a franchise like Star Wars that has so many ramifications beyond just the movie, do you have any input on your character like you did in Ex Machina or is that pretty well defined?
It’s the same thing. You talk with J.J., the writers, we discuss it, we see what it can be, if it’s a scene be like ‘Okay this is cool, but is this an option. Is this an option?’ It’s just like any other movie in that aspect.

Interview 1

Looking ahead to the big projects you have coming up, what research and development have you done to play X-wing pilot Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the supervillian Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse? Any NASA training?
I did some actually. I can’t talk too much, but I did some fight simulation. Clearly I’m in an X-wing. I actually did read a lot about war. That was something that was interesting to me, particularly the ecstasy of war. I read a book called What It’s Like to Go to War. It was straightforward but it was interesting. It was about the spiritual aspects of war, and being a warrior, and how, really, that’s not something that’s taught, the sacred space that soldiers are thrown into. I know it’s heavy stuff for Star Wars, but still, you try to find something to ground you to go inside. So that was something that I looked at.
What was your experience like doing flight simulation?
It’s like a video game.
Was the simulator just a box that you get inside?
Yeah. The whole thing was very simple. It doesn’t move around. It was just getting the sense of basic controls and there’s a couple screens. It’s a little bit boring actually.
So your stomach wasn’t in your throat?
No, it wasn’t high-end, that kinda stuff. And the truth is, it’s also space. So it’s not the same as flying in Earth’s atmosphere.

While the actor has said little about his "Star Wars" character, X-wing pilot Poe Dameron, The Huffington Post still asked him about the franchise while he was in New York promoting his latest film, “Ex Machina.” As a fan of the space opera series, what classic “Star Wars” scene would Isaac want to be in? The cantina scene from "Episode IV." "I could be one of the musicians in the background,” Isaac said as he imitated playing a set of bongos.

Interview 3

Frankly, the mantra for anyone working on any J.J. Abrams directed movie is that you keep your lips sealed and don't reveal anything to the press. And that means almost everything is under wraps unless you're playing Han Solo, Princess Leia or Luke Skywalker (mostly). Isaac, who has always been pretty frank in our previous interviews, has made some public comments about his experience on the picture which made me wonder just how formal a "keep things quiet" discussion was held when he got the role.
Isaac clarifies, "You have to keep it under wraps. You do sign the things.* Of course, everyone that comes to visit on set does. Yeah, so there definitely is the talk about keep it under wraps."
But, then there was this intriguing nugget about his role as Poe Dameron, a Rebel X-Wing fighter.
"The truth is I didn't know until I saw the trailer. I wasn’t even sure I was still going to be in the movie," Isaac says. "You never know. I’ve kind of gotten misquoted as saying I’m in the next one. I have no idea. You know, they [reporter asked], 'Was I excited to work with them?' Of course, I’d be excited to work with them. I have no idea if I’m going to, but yeah, there’s a lot of unknown elements."

Oscar Issaac: What would Nathan think of my Star Wars character? Uh.
Alicia Vikander: This is a trick question.
Oscar Issaac: Yeah, it’s a trick question, total trick question. Well, see he would think that that part where I–what is this amateur hour? They’re fake. They’re fake. He wouldn’t think anything. (spoilers for Ex Machina redacted).
Well, I know that you guys have incredible contracts that are like, ‘You can’t talk about anything!’ So it’s like–what can I ask?

Oscar Issaac: You have to come up with tricky ways–
Alicia Vikander: (To Oscar) I saved you. Otherwise you would have–
Oscar Issaac: He’d like it because likes Ghostbusters; he references Star Trek. [Nathan] likes movies. So he’d think he’s awesome.
Was the Ghostbusters bit in the script? Because it feels so spontaneous.

Oscar Issaac: Yeah. But it what was funny is that [director Alex Garland] did say–because one take I sang it–and he’s like, ‘You can’t sing it.’ And I’m like, ‘Why not?’ And he’s like, ‘Because we don’t have the rights to sing the Ghostbusters song.’

Isaac and Gleeson Interview
PS Capone is interviewer and AG is Alex Garland.

Capone: Got it. And you guys are cool if we just talk STAR WARS stuff for the whole rest of the interview, right?

DG: Yep!

AG: They want to talk STAR WARS. Finally, somebody brought up STAR WARS [laughs]

Oscar Isaac: Someone is finally interested in it.

[Everybody laughs]

Capone: To keep secrets for this long that everybody thinks they want spoiled, does that just eat away at you after almost a year of just sitting on this knowledge?

Oscar Isaac: No, because it’s not secret to me. So I know.

Capone: But you have to keep it secret.

OI: Yeah, but just from you guys. At first, what was very difficult was keeping it secret when I was being considered for it, and when I just got the part. In that little interim, that was a very difficult thing, because I couldn’t tell anybody.

DG: Even yourself.

OI: I literally couldn’t even tell myself that this was happening.

[laughs]

AG: That must have been so hard.

OI: But like my uncle, my cousin, my family, they are die-hard STAR WARS fans, so I knew they were going to be so pissed at me when they see that interview where I did some STAR WARS trivia and I didn’t know any of it. They’re going to be so ashamed. But anyway, I didn’t even tell them that I had met with J.J. or any of that, because I didn’t want them to be calling asking, “Did you get it? Did you get it? Did you get it?” So that was a little tough.

DG: It would be different if we were on the creative side of things.

Capone: That’s true.

DG: Because you can’t even bounce ideas around. That’s a different thing than what we’re going through. I think it’s fine for us, because you just don’t talk about any of it. If you were allowed to say certain things about your character or allowed to talk about any of that stuff it would be difficult because you wouldn’t know where to draw the line. But the line is right at the beginning; you don’t go anywhere.

OI: That’s why I’ve had more fun talking about X-MEN, because I actually haven’t read the script yet, so I can be like, “Yeah. He can be this, he can be that. Maybe there’s this part.” But I have no information.

Capone: Yeah, I’m excited about that, too.

DG: I’m doing pretty good, too. If you take a look at…

OI: Yeah, so anyway—X-MEN…

Oscar appeared on Live with Kelly and Michael. Nothing really new, but here's the relevant transcript:

Kelly: You mentioned before that you were shooting "star wars."

Oscar: Yes.

Kelly: Are you still shooting it? When does that come out?

Oscar: Well, that's going to come out in December.

Michael: You know this is a life-changing franchise. This is just -- how was it shooting that?

Oscar: Yeah, I mean, it was --

Michael: Can you tell us what happens?

Oscar: Nope.

[Laughter]

I'm being monitored right now.

Kelly: Can you tell us who you play?

Oscar: Yes, I do. I play a guy named Poe Dameron.

Kelly: Is he a good guy?
