Yeah in all fairness, it is turning out to be a soap opera in and of itself.

 

They certainly have destroyed him. Almost a shame, from their perspective, that he's off the case.

Unless any of us are on the jury or are magistrates or however the South African system works, I don't think there's much chance of us deciding his guilt.

To be fair, he did admit to shooting/killing her. Whether or not he planned to kill her or if his story about an intruder washes is the true issue.

 

I have not followed this in great detail but I did hear an item from the prosecution that gave me pause. Forget about the g/f for a moment. His story is that he heard someone and got a gun and went after them in his home and shot and killed said person. The prosecutor apparently threw in the argument that the whole thing was still premeditated regardless of wether it was his g/f or not.

Ok, if I am in my home, and you break in to my home in the night, you are dead. And I feel I have every right in the universe to shoot you and ask questions later. If they want to convict this dude of killing his g/f then you should do THAT and not make some stupid over generalized argument about home/life defense.

 

Well that may be true of US law, but I'm not sure what the law says about defending your home in South Africa. In the UK wouldn't killing an intruder still be a crime of some sort?

 

I caught some of CNN's coverage yesterday and I think of of their South African reporters said that because crime was so bad that nearly everybody in that area of South Africa owned a gun, so South African's intruder laws could very well be similar to some US states "Stand Your Ground" laws.

 

Well, our home defense law is based on English common law--a man's home is his castle for him to defend. So, perhaps the law in South Africa is basically the same, but that should be verified.

 

This would explain his complete lack of pop culture knowledge for several decades.

From what I read he says that his girlfriend was sleeping next to him. He got up and went out on the balcony (not sure why). When he came back inside he heard a noise in the bathroom. Instead of assuming that his girlfriend had gotten up and used the bathroom he unloads through the door without even checking to see if she was still in bed. If that actually is true (lol), he's a lock to be the first man to compete in all three varieties of the Olympics.
