Speaking of politics and the Senate:

In the commentary for AOTC, Lucas compares Padme's political term with Palpatine's:

-Padme was willing to stop serving as Queen and give up her power even though Naboo was willing to amend the Constitution to keep her as Queen.

-As we know, Palpatine stays in power from here on out . .and the entire universe suffers for it.

-Lucas concludes that with ANY democracy, there HAS to be a consistent interchanging of officials, even if the public completely supports one of the candidates in the long term. It is this balance of power which is at the fundamental root of democracy.

I am sure most of you knew this, but it was interesting to me as I never looked at the Padme/Palpatine political parallel (got to love alliteration) like that before.

I think the scene between Luke and Vader on Endor will be enhanced even more once the Saga is completed by Ep3.

"Obi-Wan once thought as you do..."

Yep, VERY powerful moment in ROTJ when Luke states, " . ..then my father is truly dead . ." and is escorted out by stormtroopers.

Vader then takes a pause and looks over the balcony. What could be going through his mind? Padme, Obi Wan, his past mistakes?

Anyone else constantly visualizing Hayden Christianson underneath Vader's mask throughout the CT? I am.

I agree. Now when I watch the CT, every subtle movement by Vader seems to have more significance. What is going through his mind when he is over Tatooine for example. I also see Hayden beneath the mask. Its one of the reasons why I like the PT, it gives the OT more depth.

Especially with ROTJ. But I get it in flashes in the other two...such as the way he rages at his troops early on in ANH. "I want her ALIVE!"

I've always loved the Luke-Vader scene on Endor before the PT came along, now it's even better.

'When gone am I... the last of the Jedi will you be.'

Now, I realize a lot of fans have issues with the Jedi and I can understand their views (though it might not seem as such).
But I'm one who actually likes the Jedi and what they're trying to do and how they've been swindled.
So with that in mind, I find this line to be even more powerful than it already was. Immensely so.
We have seen the Jedi. Both noble and arrogant. Flashy and subtle. We have seen Yoda in his heyday, having a fellow master and dare I say best friend in Mace Windu. We've seen them as protectors and briefly as generals.
They were respected and feared, and at the same time met with disdain because of their position.
We've seen the younglings and padawans. Sad times, and rich times.
We've met Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, and Ki-Adi Mundi. We have seen Kit Fisto and Plo Koon and Aayla Secura and Shaak Ti.
Very soon we'll see it all get whiped out by the man they've sworn to follow, and a man who swore to follow them.
By the time of RotJ the Jedi are all whiped out aside from the noble Yoda who lays dying in his bed, in a mud hut in a swamp far from Coruscant.
'For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic.'
'When gone am I... the last of the Jedi will you be.'
Even the noble and kind Yoda will soon be dead, joining his long gone friends in the Force.
It's just kinda hard hitting, and should especially be so after Ep III.

"...pass on what you have learned..." says Yoda in Return of the Jedi.

After seeing the Jedi as fully established guardians of the galaxy in the PT it gives us a better idea of the monumental task Luke would have ahead of him.

    From back on page one...

I just think this one is interesting because Palpatine is refering to Darth Vader's true identity...as if talking about a completly different person. Whatever Palatien does to turn Anakin to the dark side, he must have felt confident that Vader would never side against him.

On the contrary, I think this is Palpatine's big fear -- that Anakin will return to the light side. Witness how he goes out of his way to tell Luke, "By now you must know your father can never be turned from the dark side...". That's why he refers to Anakin as a totally different person from Vader.

One thing that's a little bit more dramatic in EpIV now is when Luke is attacked by the Sandpeople after he finds R2. Knowing how his Grandmother died it adds a little bit more tension. I wonder how much Luke knows about Shmi? She is buried in his back yard after all. It's also interesting to see Luke cleaning 3p0 in the same garage his parents sat in and mourned Shmi.

    Good point, Raz.

Yeah, even the part in Ep I when the Sand People are taking pot shots at the pod racers seems to be less whimsical now.

I was so glad to see Sand People in The Phantom Menace! To me that was a link back to ANH. That, and hearing the Jawa's say "ootini!" (or however it's spelt/pronounced) also during the podrace.

    Two line.

Vader in ANH: "Strange...I feel a presence that I haven't felt since....."

If the duel in Episode III is the last time Anakin and Obi-Wan met, then this would be a huge moment for Vader.

    Also from ANH.,

Owen: "What I really need is a droid who can understand the language of moisture vaperators"
C-3P0: "Vaperators! Why my first job was communicating with vaperators, similar to the ones you utilize"

Considering that C-3PO's first job was on the Lars' moisture farm, I would say that him being hired back to his original employer and niether of them recognizing each other is pretty funny.

Conversation between Anakin (potential Jedi) and Qui Gon Jinn (Jedi Knight):

Qui Gon Jinn: ?Perhaps I killed a Jedi and took it from him??

Anakin : ?I don?t think so, no one can kill a Jedi?

Anakin: ?I dreamed that I was a Jedi and came back to free all the slaves?

Anakin: ?You mean I get with you in your starship??

Qui Gon Jinn: ?Anakin, training to become a Jedi is not be a easy challenge. And if you succeed, it's a hard life.? - Anakin probably isn?t really taking this as a serious issue about a being a Jedi).

Anakin : ?But I want to go. It's what I've always dreamed of doing?. ?Can I go mum??

Shmi: ?Anakin this path has been placed before you. It is your choice alone?

Anakin: You?re coming with us, aren?t you mum??

Shmi: ?Son my place his here, my future his here?

Here?s little Anakin thinking that Jedi?s are immortal and infallible and he?s excited to be a Jedi, especially to do superhuman stuff (freeing slaves and what not) and not only that but going on a starship. Thrilling stuff he?ll be doing. So he thinks.

But he then realizes his mother can?t be with him, but although saddened, goes ahead with his ?dream?.

Well in light of the above with the above in mind note below:

Conversation between Luke (potential Jedi) and Obi Wan (Jedi Knight):

Obi Wan (in ANH) ?Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil betrayed and murdered your father?- telling this to Luke.

This is informing Luke that Jedi?s are NOT infallible andCAN be killed.

Luke : ?I want to learn the ways of the Force and become a Jedi, like my father?- After his uncle and aunt were found murdered. Luke is serious about this issue. Also due to the fact that he has nothing left there, unlike you know who.

    Then Luke with the Emperor:

Luke tells the Emperor ?I?m a Jedi like my father before me? ? Luke already knows his father knows who he used to be (with their conversation on the overhead bridge).

Perhaps upon Vader hearing this, wheels start to turn in his head. How wrong he has been and what he wanted he actually has been failing. And by saving his son, really becomes a Jedi at the death.

Finally I think the follwing is awesome - regarding what Qui Gon (who is really a Jedi) tells Anakin - that he killed a Jedi to get the saber (which isn?t true).

While Obi Wan tells Luke that Vader a Jedi (who turned to evil) killed his father (a Jedi) (Which isn?t really the truth) either.

For this, Anakin doesn?t believe what Qui Gon told him, while Luke believes what Obi Wan told him.

Exchanges like this remind me why I love SW. In the context of TPM alone, it's simply foreshadowing Qui-Gon's demise in that film, and you're supposed to say, "Oh, how ironic!"

But when you take into consideration the overall story arc of SW, there are many other layers. There's the obvious--that Anakin ends up killing the Jedi--and the slightly more hidden--that Anakin the Jedi Knight will "die" when he becomes Darth Vader. So, what Anakin said obviously cannot be true. However, it ends up that Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin himself will all have learned how to keep their identities after physical death, so are they actually, truly "dead", and Anakin's statement is really true?

    Good stuff.

The young Anakin had romantic and noble "Knights of the Round Table" style visions of the Jedi, as if they were the highest form of beings in the galaxy.

There was no problem they couldn't solve, no enemy they couldn't defeat - and he probably dreamed of being one because with those powers he could free the slaves and us his talents to help bring order to the galaxy (though not in the way he later attempted to as Darth Vader).

By the time he gets to Episode 2 Anakin realised that being a Jedi meant following a strict code and not having the freedom to do the things he felt needed to be done. In the excitement of the moment Anakin probably didn't really listen to Qui-Gon when he told him that being a Jedi is 'a hard life'.

That's right. Anakin is actually interested in adventure and "going on starships". What do you know? He's in conrol of one in the future (Super Star Destroyer". Somethings never change. :D

Seriously though, we are learning more about Luke's father with the PT's and everything is going "as planned" [face_devil]

Can I just say the oligatory everything Alec Guinness says? ;) The man put so much haunted, remorseful, nostalgic, hurt thought into the delivery of lines and the pauses in them. It's almost uncanny. I think Obi-Wan's story is going to be really compelling and feel complete in the end.

Not sure if this has been mentioned . .

Luke: "I've got to save you . ."

Vader: "You already have, Luke. You were right about me . you were right . .Luke, tell you sister . .you were right." - ROTJ.

Man, talk about the line of dialogue tantamount to the SW Saga theme of redemption!

Definitely agree with you, Spike. It's crazy how that works out so well. It makes for such a great character arc for Obi-Wan. He's managed to change a lot of his faults through some really hard trials, but he still remains human. It's perfect.
