Crap, I wish you hadn't told me about it. I could use a new Mac and this is awfully tempting...

    Dual 867MHz PowerPC G4
    256K L2 cache
    & 1MB L3 cache/processor
    133MHz System Bus
    256MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM
    60GB Ultra ATA drive
    Combo drive (DVD/CD-RW)
    NVIDIA GeForce4 MX
    56K internal modem
    $1700

It looks good, but not phenomenal, like I'd hoped.

They had a software package deal earlier...I dont see it on the site now, but it was FCP3, DVD Studio Pro and Commotion for well under $2000 (something like $1600 comes to mind).

As I said I dont see it now, but its something to keep an eye out for.

    borjis fett-

You need to read closer! Bus speeds have been significantly increased, and ALL the new tower machines are duel processor. These combined with the higher proccessor speeds make for a HUGE speed boost. I think they said 16 gigaflops!

Errr, besides, have you seen an enclosure that looks even half as cool?!

    GO APPLE!

thats why i said ddr. (referencing the higher speed bus capabilities)

what i'm wondering is what apple's agenda for the future is....The G5. I've been hearing its vaporware.

Or you can go with a Mac and get a better computer that actually works for a little more money.

Yes this thread I thought was safe from anti-Mac sentiment but nooooo someone had to go and post about a PC in here. There was no way I could let them get away with it. I'd rather not have the debate all over again, though.

Avene is just a little annoyed at Apple at the moment, don't worry about him.

Oh and Darth_Obstreperous, it may pay to look through several rumour sites before buying a Mac next time as nearly all the sites reported news that it was very likely the new PowerMacs would come out today.

Macs are cool, but they're just way overpriced for what you get. Since I've still got edit time left, I'll add this comparison here: Apple's machines (All prices in Australian dollars). Then here a computer store specialising in 3d visual workstations. Compare the prices. Apple's top machine has a GeForce card and a 120gb ATA drive. The 3d workstations for a lot less have Wildcat cards. These cards are about the best you can get for high end 3d work. On top of that, the $5999 has a Raid drive array, making it even faster.

And yes, I am pretty annoyed at Apple. Firstly they bought out Emagic and discontinued the Windows version of Logic, leaving myself and many many thousands of other Logic users without an upgrade path. Then yesterday I lost a job that would have paid some good money, all because files I was loading from a CD created on a Mac weren't recognised as being a valid format, even though the program I use reads that type of file. Apparantly Apple embed some kind of coding that can only be read on their own machines. To me this is really stupid. CD roms and files on them should be compatible with any machine, providing there's a program to read them.

Just think Avene, if you could have only had a Mac, you would have got that job, and earned all that money. :p

I am really considering upgrading my G4-400 and go with the Dual 867 and upgrading the drive to the superdrive. Since my kids are in a qulaifying school district, I get the extra 100 bucks off. That brings the total for a Dual 867, 256 DDR, GForce4MX, DVD-R/CDRW Burner for $1785. That's a decent price considering I can prolly get 700 to 800 bucks for my old G4 on eBay. I'm gonna need to see some benchmarks in after effects before I buy anything though. I'm a little bummed that they didn't include ATA 133 on the MB.

Anybody interested in a G4-400 in great condition?

Avene- sorry you had issues, but I've never heard of a CD burned on a Mac that was only compatible on the Mac, unless the person who burned the CD used a burning program that didn't support the ISO format. At any rate, I doubt the blame for that falls on Apple's shoulders.

Ha! Give me a dual Athlon MP 2100 for half that price.

Avenue, PlEASE!! tell me where I might aquire this phenominal deal. I'm currently building a dual athlon system, and I'm here to tell you, your full of it. $850 huh? My Tyan Tiger was a steal at $160 w/o shipping, my coolmaster case is $239, Power Supply, $80 (and that is a deal) 512Meg of Registered memory $179, 40 gig hard drive $120, 2 Athlon MP 2100 probably $400, I'm buying 1.4gig to keep cost down. Add a geforce4 w/ dual display, and since MACs have TV out automatically, we will have to figure that, to be conservative I'ld say $150 dollars, whatever for a sound card, NIC card, modem, firewire card... etc... that is just on parts alone. Figure in a lincenced copy of XP, which I'm sure you don't have. I think your a bit off base there.

Why don't you mosey on over to Alienware (people I believe make a comparable quality product) and check out their DV systems, and then pick your jaw up off the floor and come talk to us. I use PC, MAC, and Linux and I'm about tired of the extremeist on both sides. MAC makes a great computer, JAGUAR is looking to be a fantistic operating system.

Time for my own edit. Avenue I had more problems transfering my burned CDs from my PC to my Mac than I had the other way around. I can't wait for Jaguar so I can just access my PC without having stupid 2000 server (worthless) on my PC.

And another thing. Microsoft makes XP for MACs, the OS pack for XP that you can buy for Virtual PC runs XP faster, and takes up half the room on your harddrive it would take up on an INTEL based system.
