Welcome to the Over 30 SW Writers Club~2nd Edition

The original thread was started back in 2003 by PadmeLeiaJaina. She has now passed the torch on to Jade_Pilot.

The mission for this club is to provide a friendly meeting place where writers and readers of SW who are over 30 or close to it (25-29 are welcome as associate members) can discuss their love and fascination of SW.

The club plans to offer discussion topics and a monthly writing challenge. Club members may submit ideas for topics and challenges to the Over_30_Writers_Club sock. Suggestions are greatly appreciated and will be considered as needed.

FIRST thing to do is introduce yourself by answering a few painless questions:

    1) Age- (This is optional, but do remember you are in good company here.)

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

    4) Favorite characters and why?

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?

    And Finally...

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.

Hello all! I'm so excited to be the co-host of Over 30 SW Writers Club~2nd Edition. I hope you'll join us in some great camaraderie. The main reason we are all here is our love of Star Wars which started back for most of us in 1977. Enjoy and have fun! :)

Here's a little something about me...

    1) Age- 25 and holding ;)

    2) How long have you been reading on these boards? ~ I found the boards when I wanted to know spoilers to ROTS. When ROTS was over, I found SW Fanfiction and absolutely love it! Some day I would like to write my own stories, but for now I will enjoy reading yours.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW? ~ Currently, Beyond takes up most of my time. I read 37 SW books last year starting with COPL, but my all time fav is the OT. ESB is my fav movie. It has it all. I also like pre-TPM with Obi-Wan.

    4) Favorite characters and why? ~ As for the Saga... Han is the man! I love everything about him. Every time I read about Han, I picture Harrison Ford whether it's the finger in the face or his lopsided grin. I'm also a romantic at heart, so I like several couples for their banter and passion... H/L, L/M, K/J and Siriwan. I'm also obsessed with Kyp Durron. *Does fangirl scream*

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you? ~ It's a place were I can lose myself and dream about good and evil, right vs wrong, heros and villains. I've seen and read enough about SW to feel as though they are a part of my family too.

    Finally...

    6) Advice from a writer/reader. ~ Just have fun with it! Write to please yourself, not others.

    Thanks ~ Katie

    1) Age- (This is optional, but do remember you are in good company here.)
    Just turned 45
    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
    Since 2000

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?
I like a little of everything. It's kind of changed over the years. I really like Saga (OT) and I also enjoy Beyond. Drama and Romance mostly.

    4) Favorite characters and why?
Luke is my alltime favorite. An average guy who wasn't really anything special but found out he was special and made a difference. I'm also a L/M and H/L shipper.

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
It's fun movie series and a good escapism.

    Finally...

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.

I like to write out an outline. I don't always follow it, but it helps keep me focused. I don't do it with every story. I've got one bunny I think I'll just write and see where it goes.
Besides having a dictionary and thesaurus handy (real books), I always use a beta. It's amazing what someone else can find.

    1) Age- I'm close. 27

    2) 4 years

    3) That's hard. I love them all, but I mainly write in Beyond the Saga

    4) Ben Skywalker. He just has so much potential and a past full of drama. Luke, of course for the same reasons. Anakin Solo because he died fighting for what was right despite his promising future. Obi-Wan because the guy just suffered so much. Qui-Gon because he always had a different way of looking at things.

    5) It's sort of a family thing. We're all huge fans and I grew up on it.

    6) I'm a huge torture your characters fan. I love to put and see flawed characters in outlandish situations.

    How interesting....

Age - Over the hill[face_mischief]. I actually have to count back now, erm 32.

How long have you been writing or reading on these boards? - Year and a bit. has it been that long since ROTS came out?

Favorite genre, saga of SW? Mainly on the Saga, I like a bit of humor and angst. And SAGA over here is also an over 50's travel club.[face_laugh]

Favorite characters and why? It was Han when I was young but now it's Obi, he's good for a laugh and always hitting the bar at some stage..

Why has SW always been so special to you? I went to see it when I was 3 and loved it. Got the comics every week, not always legally[face_mischief]. When I stayed in NY for a year or so I picked up a paperback of the three movies and I realised I had forgotten how good they were. Then the Prequels got started. Was mucho disappointed at TPM but over time I have mellowed. Man.[face_peace]

Favorite tips or advise for writing - Don't really have any to be honest. Don't rush things out and post for the sake of it, I suppose. That was handy.[face_laugh]

    Cheers

    1) Age- (This is optional, but do remember you are in good company here.)

My profile admits it because when I joined I was just in my thirties. So no hiding the truth now...38 it is.

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

Four years of solid writing. Over a half million words in fanfic alone posted here. My read for about 6 months before getting a screenname I guess. I was terrified to post my first post in a reply, but I found everyone generally welcoming.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

I prefer Beyond but have come to enjoy the Saga era. I grew up with ANH and ESB so those are my loves.

    4) Favorite characters and why?

Jaina and Jag, top the pile. I wrote a whole spiel one time why, but mostly because they are deep, multi-layered characters. Their flaws make them challenging to write. I love Han and Leia as well but lurk more in those stories. Anakin and Padme, they took me a while to "get" but now I find them fascinating to read and write.

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?

Because it touches the truth of humanity at it's core. There are so many themes that reflect real life yet play out at a mythic level. Amazing.

    Thanks for hosting this :D

    *delurks*

    1) Age

    *counts on fingers*

Dear gods, am I actually going to be 32 this year?

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

    Almost two years, I think.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

Er . . . I don't think I have any. As a reader, there are fics I like and dislike in all genres and eras, regardless of the quality. Heck, my favorite fic is in a genre I can't stand. Also, I have this weird mental condition in which I keep getting rabid plot bunnies for the kinds of stories I find boring and swear I will never write.

    4) Favorite characters and why?

Lando and Leia (no 'ship intended). I'm not sure why I like them, actually. I suspect it's because the official continuity tends to be ambiguous about what they are. Neither a criminal nor a legitimate businessman, neither a full Jedi nor just a politician - you can write them so many ways and stick to the official versions. (Though I hear they've made Leia into a full-time Jedi in the recent EU. I'm reserving my judgment on that until I've read the books.)

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?

It hasn't. I saw my first SW movie (RotJ) when I was 8 or 9, and it wasn't love at first sight. I rented the OT about 10 years later and failed to fall head over heels in love. It wasn't until Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy that I got hooked, but I sort of got unhooked a third of the way through the NJO because of my interest in other fandoms. Then I found this site and became addicted . . . to the feedback, that is.

So to answer the question: because the fans here are wonderful.

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.

Steal from the best, then tweak it endlessly until it becomes yours.

    Salutations!

    1) Age- (This is optional, but do remember you are in good company here.) 29

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
I've been writing on these boards since Feb of this year, reading since '03.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

genre i'm for pretty much anything, though I prefer darker, more psychological oriented stories over angst or mush. And of course I'm unashamedly Beyond....

    4) Favorite characters and why?
I'd have to say that my favorite character would have to be Anakin Solo. He's a great amalmagation of Han and Luke, taking the best parts of both of those characters (Han's rogueishness, Luke's idealism) and twisting them into something uniquely him.

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
I grew up with SW. It's just always been there

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.
Always use spellcheck? :p Seriously, the best advice/tip I could offer is to not stop writing. If you feel like DWB is hitting you, keep writing. If you wake up with a headache, keep writing. If you can't figure out what to do in a scene, write a clown walking into the room, but keep writing. Think you found a theme in this diatribe? Then keep writing...

    Yippeeeee! We're up and running!!!

Age: Just call me thirty-something. ;)

How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

I joined in December 2005 and started posting after I acquired my master (JadeLotus) in March. So I've been fan ficcing for five months now

    Favorite genre, saga of SW?

I like many genres: humor, angst, romance. I love writing dialogue. As for which saga...well, if I had to pick a favorite...it would be Beyond. I have read most of the EU and love the ongoing tales of Luke Skywalker.

    Favorite characters and why?

Luke! Love him. Wanted to take him home with me and put him in a nice tissue lined shoe box when I first saw him on the big screen. He needed me! Really! I also like Mara and Ben, Wedge, his wife Iella and all the Wraith squadron members. And who doesn't love Ghent?

Why has SW always been so special to you?

I've always been a geeky sci-fi kind of girl and when Star Wars came out it sort of made me feel that being a geeky sci-fi kind of girl was okay.

    Finally...

Favorite tips or advise for writing.

If you are very new to writing like me, get a master. Mine has helped me tremendously. Then sit down and just start. You can always edit later, but you have to write something first.

And to celebrate....Mountain Dew and Twinkies for everyone!!!! [face_dancing]

    1) Age- 32 (33 in September)

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards? I lurked for a while before joining in November 05... I have been writing ever since. My name is Phil and I'm a FF addict **Hello, Phil**

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW? My favorite genre would have to be either romance or humor. I find the emotions involved with both to be so wonderful. My favorite era would be Before, specifically KOTOR! Although I have been slowly pushing into the Beyond era. NJO beware!

    4) Favorite characters and why? Yoda, because of his wisdom and untapped humorous possibilities. Revan/Bastila (KOTOR) and Luke/Mara, because of the romantic relationships that both couples exhibit.

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you? Star Wars was my escape. I would spend hours pretending to be in that universe, and the people felt like old friends, the events seemed like distant memories. From the moment I saw the first film, SW became a part of me, and it has never left me. I guess you could say that it helped define who I have become.

    Finally...

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing. Just write! Don't concern yourself with what people think of your writing. Others approval is just icing on the cake. Write because you want to write.

    Cheers,
    Wyo

    Age: Still 30 (barely)

How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

    Reading - about two months.
Writing - a couple of weeks.

    Favorite genre, saga of SW?

I don't think I really have a favorite era, just that I absolutely despise the prequel timeframe. I'm not too picky on genre, either - a mix of drama, action, and humor tend to make my day, though.

    Favorite characters and why?

Luke, Han, Leia - sentimental favorites.
Rogues and Wraiths - they're just spectacularly cool.
Syal & Myri Antilles, Valin & Jysella Horn, and various other EU characters that have not yet been butchered by profic.

Why has SW always been so special to you?

Because I'm in the Star Wars generation - I grew up with it.

Favorite tips or advise for writing.

    Let the characters write themselves.

    Boredom will ensue. Hoo-whoopty-ray!

    1) Age

33 in human years, the fourth stage of decalcification in universal years. (Yes, I'm a blob that can type. Astounding, no?)

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

I've been reading these boards for about five years. I've been writing since April of this year.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

I don't have a particular favorite genre. What really draws me in are well-written characters and situations.

But my favorite saga is definitely the OT. Non Special Edition.

    4) Favorite characters and why?

Luke, because he's...well, there's many qualities, some of which are purely physical...but all of which create one amazing character. :D

Han and Leia, because they're the perfect combination of brains and reality (reality as defined by the SW universe).

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?

It's been so much a part of my life since the age of four, that I can't really tell you in specific terms why it still remains so special to me. Part of the appeal might lie in the mysticism of the Force. Part of it might be the mythological undercurrents that flow within the story arcs.

    Finally...

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.

    I have two contradictory tips:

    1. Be open to as many influences as possible.

    2. Only write what makes you feel most comfortable. I don't think that's limiting yourself as an author. For me, that means I will never attempt any EU fics. I also don't write smut.

    1) Age
i'll be 30 for another month or so.

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
writing and reading since my signup date. actually started writing in general then, too. before that, the last thing i wrote was in college for a term paper.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?
i love the OT best, but don't know that i'll ever actually write something in there. for some reason i find it infinitely easier to write PT or Before, so that's where you'll find me.

    4) Favorite characters and why?
Obi-Wan is far and away my favorite. he wasn't always, my first love was Luke. Obi is just so interesting to write, a very complex character underneath a facade of simplicity.

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
oh geez, why to any of us from this generation love it? it's part of who we are, it speaks to some inner part of us that wants to be a Jedi or fly a starship or explore far off places.

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.
spellcheck is the awesome and wookipedia is your friend. i'll agree with the others here and repeat the mantra: keep writing. you'll turn around months later and find that you've improved beyond what you ever expected. i'd also suggest pushing yourself (or find a Master who will do it for you) and stretch those boundaries. don't just settle for the easy stuff. step out of your comfort zone.

Just joining in for the first time, I hadn't realized you included my age group as close to 30 or that we were invited :D

    1) Age- (This is optional, but do remember you are in good company here.)
    25

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
I've been reading a whole lot longer than actually active and posting. I first found this lovely site around 1999 when TPM was first coming out, and I registered a screenname but forgot about it. Later on I met Dianethx through the Qui-GonJinn Online e-mail list and she encouraged me to sign up, claiming she posted more frequent updates on Betrayal (yeah, I was a sucker for falling for that one, huh? :p j/k Diane)and praising the wealth of talent of the authors over here saying I would find many more Qui-Gon fics to read if I did and so I took her advice and registered again, only this time I got an adoptee who showed me around the boards.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?
Before the Saga as era. Genre, Angst with a healthy dose of fluff mixed in :D

    4) Favorite characters and why?

Qui-Gon Jinn of the PT. Of the OT, probably Han Solo. For Qui-Gon, he did what he thought was right, standing up for what he believed in, even when it wasn't popular. That takes a lot of guts, a lot of courage to stand up for what you believe like that.

Han because he's quirky and sarcastic yet underneath the smuggler persona he tries to hide behind, he really does care about his friends more than money.

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
I think because it's all about redemption and the thought that even the vilest of the vile can be redeemed gives me a great deal of hope, personally. It's a really great world to escape to in the midst of a lot of health issues in my life. When I write I don't have to worry about not being able to do a certain thing. I can control what happens to my characters even when I can't control my own life's circumstances, so thus it's cheap therapy :p

    Finally...

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.
Find a partner when you're stuck. Someone to bounce ideas off works wonders for the muse and accountability is everything if I'm going to ever finish something :p

Edits -- for markups and grammar somehow my post screwed up in the middle of it....I think I fixed all the errors this time. :p

    1) Age-

    (sigh) 40.

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

A little over a year for both.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

    Original trilogy and beyond...

    4) Favorite characters and why?

Han, Leia, Luke and very recently, Chewie.

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?

I fell in love with Han when I was 12 (ANH), and then again when I was 15 (ESB). Then I was occupied living for a while ;). Just last year, while watching again ESB after a long time, I remembered what it felt to be 15. Thanks, Han. [face_love]

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing

I get nervous if I don't know how it's going to end, so I have most of the chapters of a long fic planned beforehand. Control freak, I know. [face_worried] And I like to add little details or side stories weaved with the main issue. Background of my characters is very important too. If I don't know it, I invent something.

    35

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

    Since 2000

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

Romance and humor. Movies = Original Trilogy. EU and Fanfic = Beyond the Saga.

    4) Favorite characters and why?

    It's a 3-way tie:

I'm an OT Vader fan. I love the suit, I love the 'tude - he was my first crush. [face_devil]

As such - disturbingly enough - I'll proudly admit that I've adored Luke Skywalker since 1977. What can I say? I have a thing for adorable, shaggy-haired farmboys who grow up to be powerful Jedi Masters. [face_love]

Tying for first place is Mara Jade, of whom I've been a loyal fangirl since HTTE was published in 1991. I like everything about her and the day she added Skywalker to her name was a big ol' lump of chocolate icing on the cake.

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?

It's been a part of my life in some form for 30 years now, and I can't imagine growing up without it. I've always loved the fairy tale setting of Good vs. Evil. In a generation where everything could be relative, it's nice to have a fictional setting where there are absolutes and love does indeed conquer all.

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.

Find a tough, honest beta. Nothing will improve your writing faster than being taken down a notch or two. ;) And a really good beta will help build you back up again and your work will be all that much better for the experience. @};-

:_| I think I'm the oldest one here. Over 40 that's as far as I'll admit chronologically, mentally about 2. :p

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

Edit: Actually I've been reading longer than I was actually registered so it's more like 6 years and several odd months.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

In order, beyond, saga and before. Though I've come to love them all, I think I like beyond the best.

    4) Favorite characters and why?

See my icon. Luke, Vader, Mara, the robots, Han and Leia, and oc's.
I fell in love with the SW characters at the movie theater and with Mara when she couldn't understand why she couldn't make herself kill Luke. hehehe, we knew why and I knew she was going to be something special.

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?

I knew what it was like to grow up in a podunk, go out in the world and expect great things only to have reality come hitting you in the face. Plus it was just a totally awesome movie!

Well, Mariah, you'll have to beat 55 then. I'll be 56 in Oct.

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

I have no idea. 2003, I think. A long time writing. I didn't even know about these boards until I had written a number of stories and someone mentioned tf.n. I found the Archives pretty fast but only stumbled onto the boards by accident 6 months later.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

Angst, angst, angst and then humor. Before mostly with some Saga thrown in. I'm rarely on the Beyond boards (they are pretty scary) although I have read all the books and Mara Jade is one of my favorite non-movie characters.

    4) Favorite characters and why?

    The Fab four@};-
Qui-Gon Jinn - the perfectly, imperfect Jedi Master.[face_love] Centered, stubborn, gentle and foolish, I fell for him the moment he pushed his lightsaber into the door and it started melting. And so did I.
Obi-Wan Kenobi - the prequel one. [:D] Impetuous, rule-bound, tragic and vulnerable. He is the true hero of the series.
Anakin Skywalker - :_| foolish to the point of absurdity, fiery, beautiful, confused. His story is the story of wrong decisions and road of good intentions gone bad.
Luke Skywalker - my first love.:* His transition from farmboy to Jedi Knight just tears up my heart every time. Love him. Can't write him worth a darn but oh, he's wonderful.

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?

I was an adult when ANH came out. The first time I saw the Star Destroyer go overhead, I was hooked. In addition to its mythological basis, it helped start me on the road to discovering that I actually was artistic (I taught myself to paint so that I could have a picture of that opening - it's hanging on my wall right now). I've never looked back.
For some reason, SW touches my heart every time I watch one of the movies or read a SW book. I can't explain it more than that. There are no words....

    Finally...

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.

Just keep doing it. Don't let writer's block or distraction or people telling you to do something real with your life keep you from doing something you love. And write to please yourself. In the end, that's all that counts.

Wow, I'm impressed. :D And to answer your question, I haven't been reading it lately, but I did stumble across one of the episodes I taped ages ago when MTV aired the series when they were doing their Liquid Television thing. (During the glory days, when you also got to see Aeon Flux without Charlize Theron. :p).

31, although 30 never really happened so maybe 29 in the holding pattern?

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
I'm a n00b on the boards this go around (I'd registered once a thousand years ago pre-AOTC). A little over a year. I've been pretending to be a writer since I was 18.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?
Suspense/horror and Saga. I'm quite fond of Before, too.

    4) Favorite characters and why?
Piett and Veers --they've got those rockin' code cylinders. I love the Imps.

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
It's one of those things that defined my childhood and I really threw down with my brother for his Boba Fett t-shirt.

Oh, a new thread...*waves to the hosts* thank you! :D

    1) Age - 30 [face_tired]

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
Erm, I started reading about a month before I registered (bad lurker)...and I started writing SW stuff about 2 weeks before that.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?
    Too hard...I love them all...pass!

    4) Favorite characters and why?
Obi-Wan...though before the PT it was Han! I always had thing for Yoda as well... 8-} ... Qui-Gon is also a favorite of mine...and recently I've had an Anakin thing going on...what was the question again?

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
Ah, the first proper film I saw (eg not a kiddie film) was SW...or a new hope (I still refer to ep.4 as star wars  ...thus confusing everyone younger than me)...I was entranced by the whole thing...space travel, crazy creatures...and Han, my first crush! lol...My older brother was also a huge fan and I adored my brother, so whatever he was into I was going to be into...

    Finally...

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.

Don't worry to much about it. I assume most ppl come here to escape real life drama (well I do)...so don't stress too much about number of readers, plot holes ([face_whistling] ) or Mary Sues...Just do it and have fun.

    Hi everybody, name's correllian_ale

    *in unison: Hi correllian_ale*

    1) Age: 31, closing in on 32

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
Just passed by one year anniversary a few weeks ago; but I've been personally writing on and off since my early 20's.

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?
It started in Beyond...the whole "Neverending Story" feel, ya know? But as time goes by I find myself having more fun and more intrigued in Before. Of course, Saga will always be near and dear to me.

    4) Favorite characters and why?
Anthony Daniels once said the Saga is told through the eyes of the Droids...I on the otherhand think Han Solo is the glue of the whole thing OT. He "snuck up" on Vader during the Battle of Yavin, giving Luke the opportunity to destroy the Death Star; and in RotJ saved Lando's backside so h could do the same. Oh, and Chewie; the pair is like PB & J. :)

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
There's a lot of reasons, but the main one being I still get the same thrill I used to get when I watch my favorite scenes.

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.
Don't $%&@ up... [face_blush] oh wait, that's my advice to bands before a gig...

It's important to have pride and dedication in what your writing; but learn to recognize and avoid the point when you start to take it too seriously.

    You just wait until April....[face_mischief]

*can't resist the lure of teh survey*

    1) Age: 29, 30 in April

    2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
About a year, started with writing whch does not seem to be the clever way.[face_blush]

    3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?
Um, Saga if it's OT and Beyond, but no NJO or later.

    4) Favorite characters and why?
    Thrawn[face_love]
He's such a great villain, and I'm a Zahnatic anyway. He did a great job on the Chiss, too, so I'm pretty afraid of things still to come.[face_worried] *hasn't read any non-Zahn Chiss-stuff yet*
Vader (VADER!!!) and Luke. Say Ani and watch me run...

    5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
It captured my imagination first go in the eighties and has never let go of me again. Maybe it helped that the first novels I read were by Zahn, he's my kind of writer. And I was at a convention, I think you're stuck for life after such an experience.

    6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.
    Nothing out of the usual...
    Show don't tell.
Don't go out of character, except if it's humour
Do OCs, there soooo much space in the GFFA...
Do a ducking good job, or I won't read. (Though that one is probaly highly unuseful:p )
