I would counter, though, that I don't usually name my toaster OR my vacuum cleaner. If I had named my toaster Mr. Brown, for example, and I was encountered with a toaster that introduced itself as Mr. Brown, I'd probably remember something.

C-3PO never says his name to Owen in ANH. And since there are a ton of 3PO droids that all look the same except for color, and since C-3PO is a different color in ANH than in AOTC, there is absolutely no reason for Owen to think that it's the same droid.
