I know a lot of peeps around think that Palpatine touching Vader on the forehead is showing compassion towards him. I'm not conviced though. Here's what I think on this matter: He's using a Force power to put Vader into unconcienceness. If you watch closely you see Vader writhing a bit and then becomes still after the touch. We also see Obi-wan do this ( the opposite effect, but a related power) in IV when he brings Luke back to concienceness after the Tusken attack and Qui-gon uses it on Jar jar in the bongo. I don't remember clearly but I think Obi-wan also does it to Padme on Mustafar. I'm pretty sure he touches her on the forehead not on her neck as if to be checking her vital signs.

    Any thoughts on this?

There does seem to be a lot more going on there than what we see. However, Palatine's compassion for Vader goes only as far as the decades of investment the Sith have made in him.

Exactly, it's more like "Here, lie still so you don't die before I can use you."

OB1 also puts padme to sleep before she pops. When she asks about Anikan.
