It's unestablished. There's an unvalidated theory that it's Cos.

 

where did cos origanate?

 

go to www.imdb.com and look up Return of the Jedi. It lists Ian as Cos Palpatine.

 

It was in an early draft of the script or something. Theoretically, it could be his name, or it could stand for Chancellor of Senate, or it could just be nothing, which, in fact, I'm betting it is.

 

Also in early drafts it was Cos Da****. Lucas is so clever, .

I'm pretty sure this question has been asked 1000 times before.

And i'm pretty sure that everytime, I chime in about now and say that its Augustus. Its a very imperial sounding name (being the first Roman Emperor) Where's the proof MysteryWhiteBoy, you ask? The final track on TPM soundtrack is called 'Augie's Great Municipal Band.' Augie, were that palpatines first name, would have a band because he was Senator.

Personally i'd like it to be omething like Augustus because Cos just sounds stupid. Cos Da**** was the name of the original Emperor in the first draft. Of course, back then, Alderaan was the Capital and Chewie was Wedge, and Biggs was Leia's brother. Lots of things change folks.

Actually, the original version of his name was Cos Dadick. The confusion is due to the fact that on the original UBB boards, they censored it and it looked like Da****, and some people just guessed what it was. But when tf.n had it up on their page, I'm pretty sure it was Dadick.

They never really mentioned his first name. They might mention it in one of the prequels eventually. In the books he is always referred to as Senator, Councilor, or Palpatine.

 

Maybe he just scrapped his first name, like Madonna or Prince. And then he proceeded to destroy all records of his first name ever exsisting

Last i heard his first name was Da****...and COS was a title abbriviated...like Chancelor Of the Senate...

 

Strange that no one already came in saying it was Frank Palpatine, with the TPM-proof "I must be Frank, your highness" ... I find that funny!

In Crimson Empire II, Chairman Xandel Carivus styles himself as "His Benevolence the Emperor Carivus," which is more evidence that the Sovereign of Empire takes his or her surname rather than given name as his or regnal name.

As for the question of "Cos"....

There is absolutely no admissable evidence that HIM The Emperor's given name was "Cos." Nor is there any proof for the commonly given contention that it is an abbreviation for anything---the context in which Cos Da****'s name was given (followed by a string of titles) suggests quite strongly that it is quite simply his given name.
