Alright. It always makes me wonder who the heck is in charge with filing reports like this. I mean; at least get things straight before you post articles/do news things about it. For all we know these children could just have severe asthma or something.

Since I actually do testing for Enterovirus D68, yes it is real. And yes, it is prevalent in the midwest this year.

It seems like it will be the 'hot' strain this year- like H1N1 for 2009. However, it is early in the flu season, so maybe we will get some other prevalent strains.

Children, elderly and immuno-compromised patients. Like most other illnesses, as far as our lab.

However, most doctors are not sending their positive enterovirus samples to the department of health for confirmatory testing yet.

While I agree with your sentiment, there aren't vaccinations against enteroviruses. They are so numerous and common plus getting one typically results in cold symptoms-not hospitalizations.

Breaking news: lower respiratory diseases can kill children, especially those with a history of breathing problems.

And before you think I'm being dismissive:

I live right smack in the middle of it, in central Missouri. My elementary school aged daughter started exhibiting symptoms; fever, wheezing, the whole deal. My wife is asthmatic. Additionally, we found out that my daughter had been exposed to someone who was later diagnosed with pneumonia. We decided to keep her home from school, and avoided the pediatric center. Why? Because why would we want to expose her to a crap-ton of kids who actually are sick, only to be told she has something for which there is no cure? We managed her symptoms, and (this is important) did NOT completely lose our **** about it. A couple of days later, and she was fine.
