I know, I know, last thing I need is to start another story. What can I say? I'm a bunny-slave.

    Title: Perfect Strangers
    Author: DantanaSkywalker
    Timeframe: LOTF, AU
Characters: Jaina Solo, Kyp Durron, Leia Solo, others, a few OCs
    Genre: angst, romance, humour
    Keywords: angst, romance, K/J
Summary: Jaina's a week from her wedding, and someone from her past makes an unexpected return. There's just one problem. He doesn't remember who he is.
Author's Notes: This one isn't necessarily a sequel to "Never Be", though MiaTieska pointed out that it could be. It certainly takes place after it. Contains "Dark Nest" spoilers!

    --Prologue--

"Look, I said I don't want to talk about it."

Silence greeted this statement. After a moment, Jaina Solo paused on the path and turned to look at the man following her. "Last night was a mistake, and I'm sorry that . . . I had no right to do that to you."

Kyp Durron's dark brows lowered over his piercing green eyes. "What, like I didn't consciously make the choice with you? I guess this means you're not interested in a repeat."

She flinched from his caustic tone, and her face slowly flooded red. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "But I can't do this right now."

"Jaina, what happened last night?" He reached out, but she stepped back from his touch, and with a sigh he let his arm drop back to his side.

"I finally heard from the Chiss," she said. "They found Jag."

Considering that it had been three months since Jag's fighter had been shot down at Tenupe, Kyp didn't figure the news was good. He sighed again, and dragged her against him, embracing her.

"I'm sorry," he murmured into her hair.

After a moment, Jaina pulled away. "It's not your fault," she said. "He was trying to kill all of us. I understand why Mom did what she did."

Kyp motioned up the path and they continued towards the hangar, where they were to get their StealthX fighters. He kept silent until they'd finished their pre-flight cycles and were cleared by Control.

    "So, about last night . . ."

    "Kyp!"

    ----------

The mission had gone well. Jaina was pleased with their success, and smiled as they reached open space above the planet she and Kyp had just spent two months on.

Her comm clicked, and she sighed mentally.

    "What?" she snapped.

"Whoa," Kyp said. "I was just gonna ask if we were planning to head for Coruscant or Ossus."

"Coruscant," Jaina said. "We need to talk to Uncle Luke. Which you should know, as one of the council members."

"Right." Kyp cleared his throat. "I just thought . . ."

    "Thought what?"

"Well, maybe you'd want to see Cilghal. For that . . . thing."

She turned the comm off and snorted. Then she flipped it back on. "I'm fine. No need to worry. Let's just go."

"Right," he said again, and the comm fell silent.

Jaina sighed. "I'm sorry, I'm just tired and I want to see my family."

"It's fine," he said shortly. "Keying in jump coordinates now."

She did the same. Just as she was about to pull the hyperspace lever, she got a flood of warning through the Force. At the same moment, her proximity alarms started blaring. She twisted in her seat and saw that they'd been followed off the planet.

"Shuba!" she swore, borrowing one of her aunt's favourite curses. "Evasive manuevers!"

"I'm not a youngling!" Kyp retorted, as he spun his fighter starboard.

Jaina went in the opposite direction, with her astromech screaming at her. "Shut up, Sneaky!"

An entire squadron of B-wings were after them. They were brand-new, shiny fighters, and had to have been appropriated from the Killiks or their allies, because i

...Wait. That was... that was it? I thought there was so much more!! Nooooo!!! Ended too fast!! Too abruptly!!! Too cliffhangery!!!

Jaina's...really bothering me after the NJO. Set her head straight in this fic, please!!

....Hahahaha. And only YOU would have "angst" and "humor" both in the same story. [face_laugh]

Dana, your stories always start out with so many questions. What exactally was the "mistake" that happened "last night" (I think I have an idea but still want it confirmed)? What's the "thing" that Jaina should see Cilghal about? and DID KYP JUST DIE???

    Consider me hooked.

Ha ha ha, yes, only I would. :p

The Jaina of this 'fic is relatively well-adjusted. :p No buggish tendencies.

Well, it certainly looks like I just did, doesn't it? :p

You'll see, you'll see, and might have. [face_devil]

Okay. :) Starting with chapter 2, you're on it. :D

    --Chapter One--

    Coruscant
    Five Years Later

    "No! No pink!"

Jaina stared down at the child who stood before her, arms crossed belligerently, and managed not to grit her teeth. "How about the blue dress?"

    "No! I want green!"

Jaina looked at the pink satin dress in her hands and sighed. Well, the dress really didn't look good with the child's colouring, but still. "Honey, green isn't one of the wedding colours."

The four-and-a-half-year-old child frowned petulantly, sticking her lower lip out. Then she sat down on the floor with a thump and glared at Jaina. "Hate pink."

"Kaylee Solo, you-" Jaina stopped, and looked down at the child.

Sighing, Jaina tossed the dress aside. It wasn't like she'd picked the colours. How she'd let Mestra plan things, she didn't know. Well, Mestra and her own mother, Leia. Between the two of them, they'd picked a "soft rose" and a "cool blue".

She sat down on the floor next to her daughter. Kaylee was still frowning, her dark brows drawn together over her hazel-green eyes. The child's hair was as straight as Jaina's, but absolutely black, thick and glossy. Jaina had resisted Leia's attempts at giving her granddaughter bangs, and it fell past the girl's shoulders in thick waves.

"Okay, I give up. Let's go get you a green dress."

Jaina got to her feet and took her daughter's hand. Kaylee grasped it eagerly, hopping in place with excitement. "Just remember the rules, sweetie. No using the Force while we're out, okay?"

Kaylee stopped hopping and nodded solemnly. "'Kay, Mommy."

    "Are you going somewhere?"

Jaina paused and looked over her shoulder. Leia had just come into the room, holding a box full of . . . something. "Kaylee and I are going shopping. I'm going to get her a green dress because she doesn't like the pink or the blue."

Leia frowned. "But green isn't in the-"

"Mom. I don't care." Jaina looked at Kaylee. "Honey, go wait for Mommy by the door."

Kaylee scampered off. Jaina turned to her mother.

"Mom, it's my wedding. And if I want my daughter in a green dress, she'll be in a green dress."

Leia held up her hands. "It's fine with me. But Mestra won't be happy."

"Yeah, well, it's not Mestra I'm marrying, it's her son."

"The son that Kaylee doesn't like," Leia muttered.

Jaina snorted. "Kaylee doesn't like very many people, Mother. Including her uncle Jacen."

"Could that be inherited?" Leia mused.

Jaina paused in turning for the door. "I really don't know, Mother."

There was speculation in her mother's voice as Leia continued, "I find it so . . . strange that you and Tenel Ka would have children within two years of each other, and neither of you will tell anyone who the fathers are."

"Well, I would think it's obvious that Jacen is Allana's father. I probably won't be home for dinner, I'm going to stop by Vash's office and he'll probably take us out to eat," Jaina said, and escorted her daughter out.

    ----------

One week, Jaina thought, as she and Kaylee rode the turbolift up to the administrative offices of Forlin Enterprises. One week and I'll be Mrs. Vash Forlin.

The thought wasn't displeasing. After all, Vash was a good man, a strong supporter of the Jedi, and a successful businessman. He'd been a good friend of Jaina's over the last two years, and he absolutely adored Kaylee, even if the child wasn't exactly enamoured of him.

And Jaina was fond of Vash. She was perfectly aware that she while she loved him, she wasn't in love with him. But that was okay, because she could live with that. He was a trusted friend, like Zekk had once been. And most importantly, he wasn't Force-sensitive.

Today, though, she found herself strangely depressed. She wasn't looking forward to the wedding as much as she normally did. That might have had something to do with the approaching anniversary.

    She tried

Okay, so i'm another one who doesn't normally read J/K. But this is fantastic. I'm completely enthralled already and you've only written 2 posts. I love Kaylee. She is adorable. I thought this was going to be another Jaina and Kyp are going to get married and then Jag shows up. But it's so not. I love it. I want to be on the Pm list. I can't wait for the next post. :)

    Dana,

Wonderful beginning! Absolutely fantastic. I was hoping you hadn't killed Kyp, then it all made sense. Also loved the casual mention of Allana. Yup, that's Jacen's little girl all right. Aunt Jaina got it right in one. Also loved Kaylee's name. All I can say is that no power in the 'verse can stop her. (Sorry I've been watching too much of Serenity and Firefly and Kaylee's too darn cute and cheerful.) Great beginning, and I'm sure great angst will ensue. After all, Kyp has to figure out he's not Zeth at some point right? Right?

I'll add you to the list. :)

    Yep, you sure can. :)

Thank you very much. :) Heh heh, you got it in one! That's exactly where her name came from.

As for Kyp's memory, you'll just have to wait and see. But one thing I can say for sure is, this is going to make the wedding planning veeeerryyyy interesting.

Well, Kaylee is a very . . . perceptive child. She senses her mother's emotions very well. Let's just leave it at that for now. :)

Can't wait to see Jaina and her fiance's reaction to Kyp. And more of little Kaylee. (Now, do I see mechanical expertise and a sweetly oblivious doctor in her future by any chance?)

I know, I know, I need to update "Like The Deserts", too. I'm still working on chapter 12, it'll be up soon, I hope.

    --Chapter Two--

Nearly every day for five years, Jaina regretted that her last conversation with Kyp had been an argument, that she'd never told him just how much she'd cared. Never told him that he was going to be a father from an event that she had once viewed as a mistake.

Jaina's hand tightened on Kaylee's and she ignored for a moment her daughter's protest. She couldn't believe it. He was alive!

She had absolutely no doubt that this man was Kyp Durron. He had a few small scars on his right cheek, from what she didn't know, but she'd known him thirty years, she should be very familiar with him. Too familiar, she thought, remembering the one night they'd had together. Funny that she couldn't remember just about any of her time with Jag in that way, but one night with Kyp was indelibly engraved in her mind.

"You okay, ma'am?" he asked. And his voice, dear Force!

"I, uh . . . I'm sorry, you just look an awful lot like a . . . a friend I lost several years ago." Jaina forced herself to rein in her emotions and said, "I'm Jaina Solo."

"Jaina," he repeated, with no evidence of recognition in those eyes, and her heart broke. "Pretty name. Solo, did you say?"

She nodded. It was him, she knew it. Even if he apparently didn't. That, or he was just deep under cover for some reason. But no, the Kyp she'd known would have been sending her reassurances through the Force.

"You wouldn't happen to be related to a Han Solo, would you?"

Jaina's eyes widened. "Actually, I'm his daughter."

    "Zeth's" face turned thoughtful. "Huh."

Jaina tenatively reached out with the Force, probing in a technique that he himself had taught her, and what she found nearly brought her to her knees.

Most of his mind was a blank, sealed within a metaphorical box that she couldn't penetrate. What she could reach were memories she didn't know, probably of things within the last five years. He had amnesia.

Zeth stooped and picked up the package she'd dropped upon seeing him. The shawl had spilled from its wrapping and he held it in his hands. "I think this is yours, too."

"Thank you," she murmured. Half of the nerves in her body wanted to fling herself into his arms and never let him go, and the other half wanted to run screaming to find Uncle Luke.

He was looking down at Kaylee now, who had apparently formed an instant attachment to the man, which was rare for her finicky child. "Cute kid. How old is she?"

"Four and a half," Jaina said, her voice strangled. Your child! her mind screamed.

Even if his name had changed and he had no memory of who he'd spent the first forty-one years of his life as, his speed of perception hadn't changed. "Oh, I'm sorry. Do I, uh . . . I'm guessing I look like the kid's father?"

Numbly, Jaina let herself nod. She held her tongue, wanting to tell him, "No, you are her father." She had to find Uncle Luke, and she had to get Kyp back!

    "Hey, uh . . ."

She looked up at "Zeth". "Yes?"

"Look, I'm gonna be here all this week, and halfway into next. My booth's right over there-" He gestured to a bright yellow tent, which was probably what had caught Kaylee's attention. Jaina should have figured to look there first. "-You want to bring the kid back sometime, let her play with the Mon Cal sparklefish we got?"

    Mon Cal sparklefish.

    Vash.

Jaina groaned mentally. What was she going to do?

"Oh, I, uh . . . I suppose, maybe. I think she'd like that. Her name is Kaylee, by the way." Jaina bit her tongue, not knowing why she'd said that.

"Kaylee," he said, a smile on his face. Jaina felt the urge to burst into tears, hearing him say his daughter's name for the first time. "I hope to see you around again, Kaylee."

Kay nodded, grinning, and she looked so much like Kyp it hurt.

"We have to be going now," Jaina found herself saying. "But we'll probably be back."

"See you around." He waved, and moved off

You're going to end it at that! :_| Well at least Kyp/Zeth is taking it well. I mean he could really be mad about this if he wanted to. Poor Jaina, she's in a bit of a pickle now isn't she. Jaina's finally going to have to admit who kaylee's dad is. Although it seems like every jedi in the room knows. I sure hope someone clued in Han, otherwise i have the feeling he'll be strangling Kyp when he gets the chance.

I love how they just practically drag Kyp off, Mara showing off her lightsaber... I'm sure there was a better way to do it, like, tell him that they know who he is before brandishing weapons, LOL. And then they hook him up to everything...LOL.

I love how his brainwaves calmed when he thought of Jaina. Dang. I'm so excited to see what happens, and what Vash is gonna do, and if Kyp will fight for her and...ooooh.

O my. Interesting turn into the olde amnesia gig. I have to admit, though, that I'm more curious about Han's reaction to this amnesiac version of Kyp than Jaina's. I don't think Han would be able just idly sit and wait until things will sort themselves out...
