Beyond - Legends Perfection (Shards) [vignette, Tycho Celchu remembers Alderaan]

Part 4:

The way back to base was a long one, interrupted by many falls and stumbling.
He steadied himself on doors, walls, everything that was in his way.
?Sithspit? he said and again, between something that might have been a laugh or a sob, he said: ?Sithspit.?
He knew, that it had to be in the middle of the night, but he had to...had to talk with someone.
Now. It couldn?t wait.
One door, two doors, three doors...He couldn?t read the numbers on the doors, they blurred in front of his eyes, but whether it was because of his drunken state or because of his fatigue, he couldn?t say.
Fourth door?he raised his hand and knocked, having to steady himself again on the wall.

Wedge Antilles was fast asleep.
He was half-buried under the covers, but one of his hands still laid on the comlink,that was lying next to him, telling of his concerns for his
best friend.
If Tycho wasn?t there tomorrow, he would personally go and look for him.
He wasn?t about to list him as AWOL so easily.
Suddenly, it knocked.
Wedge grumbled in protest and put his pillow over his head.
It knocked again.
Blearily, he opened blood-shot eyes and risked a look at his chrono.
?3 am in the morning. Sithspawn, who wants so urgently to become my enemy??
Another thought hit him and made him jump out of the bed.

He stood up and pulled a tunic over his head.
Yawning, he shuffled to the door and opened it, but no one could have prepared him for the man, who almost came falling in through the opening door.
He steadied him.
?Tycho?! What did you do??
It was really Tycho, but he looked terrible, even worse than in the afternoon.
He had dark rings under his red-rimmed blue eyes, which were brighter than normal and his light brown hair was tousled, so unlike his usual neat self. He also seemed to sway a little bit against the door frame.
?L-Listen, Wedge. I?m sorry to disturb you now, but I wanted to apologize. For?for earlier. For snapping at you like-like I did.?
Wedge was relieved, that Tycho was back to his normal calm self, but still?
?And you?re telling me that now, at 3 am in the morning??
Tycho waved his hand vaguely. ?You-you never know, what happens tomorrow. If-if one is still there.?
If Wedge had been concerned before, now he was very worried.
A sharp lump formed in his throat, and he cursed the Empire for having done so much evil to his friends.
He pulled Tycho in his room, putting his hands on the other?s shoulders and tried to reassure his friend a bit with that gesture.
?I saw them, Wedge? Tycho whispered. ?I saw my family??
?Tycho??
?I know, that they are dead. But Mum was there, and she told me, that they would always be there. Even if I couldn?t see them at the moment.?
?But really" his eyes lost their focus ?they?re all dead. Dead.?
Tycho?s words were getting more and more slurred, and Wedge had trouble understanding him.
?How much did you have to drink??
?Tried to drown it in alcohol. Didn?t work.?
Wedge didn?t want to say something like ?I am sorry? because it just wouldn?t have felt right.
He couldn?t do anything else except pulling Tycho in a tight hug.
Tycho escaped something between a choked laugh and a sob and he buried his head in Wedge?s shoulder, while Wedge rubbed his back soothingly.
[i]The Empire will pay. Oh yes, for all what it has done. It will dearly pay.[/i]
?They have all left?and I can?t follow this time.?
Wedge pulled back a little.
?I haven?t left and I won?t do so. Ever. You?re my brother, Tycho. A brother doesn?t leave the other. Me and Wes and Hobbie, we will be always there for you.?
Tycho didn?t say anything, but after a while he raised his head.
?Family?? he breathed.
?Family? Wedge confirmed.
Suddenly, Tycho chuckled a bit shakily and Wedge stared at him, bemused.
?Pathetic, aren?t we??
Wedge laughed, he couldn?t help it.
?You?re the one drunk here? he retorted light-heartedly.
Tycho swayed slightly against the door.
?Come on, Master Alehead? said Wedge, determined to keep the atmosphere light,?le

 

Finally.
Wedge is so sweet with Tycho, really like the brother he is.

Sorry I've not responded to the end of this lovely story (bad week @ work with a new computer system).

It's nice that Tycho has a "family" of close friends to love & protect him. Friends have gotten me thru some bad times and I love all that I call friends as much as I do my family.

Wedge's love for Tycho shows in his care and concern as his friend struggles with his very intimate loss.

May we all have friends like Wedge, Wes & Hobbie. Keep writing more pilot fic.....it is appreciated!
