It's the free bonus pet that more than likely comes with your new kitten.

    YES KITTEN!!

    Also, what Everton said.

I must warn you though, once you get a kitten, you'll want moar.
My husband and I adopted a rescued cat about two years ago and now we feed a feral and we're planning to get this feral to vaccinate and neuter it. And just this morning we found a third cat and I think it may be a feral too and I want to adopt them all.

TL;DR version: you'll turn into a crazy cat lady, even if you're a guy :p

Dammit Arlol, can't you Google or Wiki?

    Toxoplasma gondii

I'm allergic to kitties myself, so I prefer dogs. The smaller, the better.

It means nothing. Pay no attention to the lady in the corner with cat hair

Cat hair - oh, it "gets EVERYwhere."

I speak from experience. The cat goes hiking with me, drives the car... although Sam does not like to be brushed so it's partly my fault.

Informing yourself is better than your typical "um...what" replies.

The way the words were I thought he was talking about some sort of taxedermy, and there was no way I wanted to look that up.

Absolutely get a cat, but a kitten can be a lot to deal with. I have two cats. The first is a 4yr old cat who had been returned to the shelter. She is marvelous: already fixed, litter box trained, not too hard on the furniture, quiet, etc. She's never jumped on tables or desks, and she's even pretty good about laying on kitty-designated blankets to keep my sofa and bed more furr-free.

Then I adopted a kitten (to keep the cat company), and she's a handful, to say the least. She jumps on the windows, desks, tables, claws the furniture, and has shredded part of my shower curtain. A lot of those issues can and will be addressed over time, but kittens are work. Personally, if I had to do it over again, I probably would adopt another adult cat who is already used to living in a home. The suggestion to get two kittens is probably a good one though, if you go that route.

Not if they take the precaution of washing their hands after they clean the litterbox.

I have taken care of waaaay too many cats. It's not by choice. They home in on me and don't leave. It's genetic. But at least I have tons of experience to use against people.

I guess rescue kittens are fine, but I always lean more toward getting an adult cat (again, if I ever actually went out and adopted one). I'd go for the shyest of the litter. :p People always pass them over (my family kept one of a litter my mom fostered years ago), but they're just as sweet as any other cat. Albeit weirder.

The main reason we're thinking kitten over a cat is because of the allergies - the younger you get the cat, the more likely my husband won't have issues. Getting a short-haired cat should help too, from what we've read.

Well, as far as I know, short hair by itself wouldn't help because most cat allergies are caused by a protein they secrete rather than the hair. Even a lot of hairless cats aren't hypoallergenic.

My understanding is that the long hair holds more dander and that's why allergies are more of an issue? idk, I'm just following Dr. Google.

...Maybe? I'm a bit skeptical. :p That said, I've thankfully never had to really deal with cat allergies.

Short hair is supposed to be better than long, yes - though I'm not sure why.

The hairless cat (ugly as sin, IMHO) is supposed to cause no allergy symptom at all. Yes, it's the dander, not the hair itself which is an issue - grooming helps, less shed hair helps, etc.
