Jackson branches into gaming market

Peter Jackson has teamed up with Microsoft to create two new series of interactive games exclusively for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live.

The new company Wingnut Interactive will see Jackson and partner Fran Walsh join forces with Microsoft and Xbox.

"I think we are right on the threshold of being able to design a new way to tell stories," says Jackson.

Their first project will be a new chapter in the Halo franchise - then, apparently, the gaming world's their oyster.

"The whole ten billion dollar video games business will be looking at New Zealand and what Peter Jackson produces," says Australia New Zealand director for Xbox, David Mclean.

Microsoft says the second series will be an entirely original creation aimed at bringing new audiences to the world of interactive entertainment.

Mclean, says the Kiwi director will bring a blend of film and interactive gaming to life, in his own unique way

"What we are looking at here is not Peter Jackson saying he is going to make a game, or Peter Jackson saying he is going to make a movie, but Peter Jackson saying that he is going to create something that's a blend between the two - something that we have never seen before," says Mclean.

He says the project will put New Zealand at the centre of new innovation in video gaming.

The announcement may be big on spin, but it is light on detail. Exactly how big of an impact Wingnut Interactive will have on the local industry remains to be seen. Games, like movies, take years to develop

"There is a lot of potential to do something very very big and something very revolutionary. We'll just have to see what happens when the game comes out in a few years time, whether they deliver on that," says Mario Wynands of the New Zealand Game Developers Association.

Mclean says there is no release date yet, because Jackson will take as long as necessary to ensure the games meet his exacting standards.

At this rate he won't have any time to make The Hobbit

Why?

He's got a great digital effects team behind him and with the stories / concepts for movies he's come up with and been a part of already are great and I'm sure he'll make some good games.

He wont make the hobbit, so stop holding your breath.

I hear George Lucas has a videogames company.

Anyway, Jackson worked closely with Ubisoft for the Kong game. Stephen Spielberg has an office for coming up with games concepts for Vivendi.

Spielberg also has a games interests...just recently a Melbourne based games company was asked to do some design work for a PC game of his choice and some CG work for a film of his coming out (can't remember title but it was a WW2 fighter pilot one)
