    I really like his reason for doing it...

    Why am I doing the Wall again now?

    I recently came across this quote of mine from 22 years ago:

    ? What it comes down to for me is this: Will the technologies of communication in our culture, serve to enlighten us and help us to understand one another better, or will they deceive us and keep us apart??

    I believe this is still a supremely relevant question and the jury is out. There is a lot of commercial clutter on the net, and a lot of propaganda, but I have a sense that just beneath the surface understanding is gaining ground. We just have to keep blogging, keep twittering, keep communicating, keep sharing ideas.

    30 Years ago when I wrote The Wall I was a frightened young man. Well not that young, I was 36 years old.

    It took me a long time to get over my fears. Anyway, in the intervening years it has occurred to me that maybe the story of my fear and loss with it?s concomitant inevitable residue of ridicule, shame and punishment, provides an allegory for broader concerns.: Nationalism, racism, sexism, religion, Whatever! All these issues and ?isms are driven by the same fears that drove my young life.

    This new production of The Wall is an attempt to draw some comparisons, to illuminate our current predicament, and is dedicated to all the innocent lost in the intervening years.

    In some quarters, among the chattering classes, there exists a cynical view that human beings as a collective are incapable of developing more ?humane? ie, kinder, more generous, more cooperative, more empathetic relationships with one another.

    I disagree.

    In my view it is too early in our story to leap to such a conclusion, we are after all a very young species.

    I believe we have at least a chance to aspire to something better than the dog eat dog ritual slaughter that is our current response to our institutionalized fear of each other.

    I feel it is my responsibility as an artist to express my, albeit guarded, optimism, and encourage others to do the same. To quote the great man, ? You may say that I?m a dreamer, but I?m not the only one.?

    Huh. I don't know whether to be impressed by their ability to get along for a few hours, concerned that they're becoming forgetful in their old age, or scared of the forthcoming Apocalypse that this clearly portends.

    It'a a shame we couldn't see them all on stage again one last time. Live 8 was so awesome. Me and my dad were Pink Floyd fans and he died about a year before that reunion happened. That made it that much more powerful. But I would love to see these two together again, provided no one will have to tear them apart.

    Somehow missed the news that Gilmour and Waters played together, think I was on vacation. Cool stuff.

    Oddly, while I was on vacation there was a tribute band in town called Pink Froyd. Strange coincidences...

    I always wanted to see Syd Barrett reunite as well. Have everyone up on stage. I was always fascinated with Syd, I think it would have been awesome to have all five of them together.

    Frank Zappa was supposably to have played with them on stage once. I though that was awesome because I'm a Zappa fan too. But the video on youtube is just a still, so it's hard to tell wether or not he is actually playing. It kind of sounds like him playing, but it very well not be him.

    Here's an interview with Nick Mason who mentions that Zappa jammed on Interstellar Overdrive with them;

    http://www.pinkfloyd-co.com/band/interviews/nbm/nbm_frame.html

    The internet's full of references to the jam;

    http://www.google.com/search?q=pink+floyd+with+frank+zappa

    So it seems legit to me, but whether that's the actual audio from the jam on the youtube clip is harder to determine.

    It sounds similair to Zappa's style of playing, but yeah it is difficult to tell.

    I still will be utterly flabbergasted if Floyd ever gets back together, especially since Rick Wright's passing. Still, a lineup of Waters, Gilmour and Mason with Pratt would still sell out every stadium they ever go to. But I think there's a better chance of Led Zeppelin touring again than Floyd. That's just me.

    I think you're right. We may see few performances for like charities and such, similair to Live 8. But I don't think a tour will be happening.
