    Title: Calypso's Island
    Author: Raphire
Summery: Pre Curse of the Black Pearl. Tells the story of Calypso and Jack's First meeting. But most definately not their last.
Additional Notes: I don't own Pirates never will. So I'm just borrowing it now.

The thunder; the pounding, rolling thunder of the surf. It beats within her.

Filling her head, smothering her thought, smothering her life.

She watches it far from the shore, sometimes drawing nearer, but never touching it.

The smell of salt is so entrancing to her, it calls to her heart. It calls to her soul.

She can never be free of it.

    So she watches.

She waits away from the shore, hoping to see the ship.

    Hoping to see him.

But she knows she must wait another year and a half. He is still so far away.

The ocean however, is tantalizingly close. It beckons to her.

    Promises secrets.

She once knew of them but as she ages she forgets.

She tries to drown out the voice with music but her voice isn?t as strong as it used to be.

Years ago she could have spoken and any man would submit.

A whisper and they would kneel. They would pray to her.

When she shouted all men trembled.

But when she sang? They came to her.

From all over the world they found their way to her feet and were filled with awe.

Now she sits in a shack. She gathering things for herself. Odd things, but they make her happy. One object she keeps hidden.

She can?t bear to look at it.

It sits under the floorboards where she can never stumble upon it, where she never has to touch it.

She knows if she saw it she would have to pick it up. She would have to hold it.

Then she would lose her way and all that she worked for would be gone. She would leave her shack forever.

Because without a reminder she could fool herself for a little while; she could hide from the ocean a little longer.

This life of hers works well until pirates come. They hear of her treasures. Not of gold but of items.

They come for her magical powers. Her insight into a world they cannot see. One she used to rule.

It hurts every time they force her to look. It reminds her of how small her sight has become and of how close the ocean is.

But they bring her gifts, objects that supersede mortal powers. These things fascinate her, give her hope that one day she might find a way to be free.

    Then they found it.

It called to them from beneath the floorboards and before she could stop them they had torn it out.

    They passed it around.

They poked at it and prodded it with their big fat fingers.

But they couldn?t figure it out.

Finally they came to her, bringing the object so much closer to its mistress.

It burned her mind and she drew back.

She knew what would happen if she touched it.

But they didn?t stop drawing inwards.

They cornered her and held it before her.

They screamed and yelled at her to explain it but she couldn?t.

Cause how could one explain desire?

One of them hit her and she tasted her own blood.

    So very human.

Then the one burst through the door.

He distracted them with words and with his drunken actions.

Then his nimble fingers slid in and nipped the object from their hands.

    They never noticed.

Not when he convinced them to leave, not when he bartered passage with them, and certainly not when he stole their ship.

It wasn?t until they had arrived in Tortuga in their little raft and sat pondering her island. Then they realized they were missing something.

But at that point it was a broken old compass to them.

    Nothing more. Nothing less.

And still she waited. Waited for the year and a half to be up.

    Fin.

    How very lovely. =D=

I loved the feel of this - the prose 'rolled' for lack of a better term, almost as if it were a current, the waves rolling. The flow of it was lovely, and the feel of Calypso's power - her rages and her siren song was beautifully expressed! I am one of the rare fans who enjoyed the third film more than the first, and her story arch is the primary reason why. You have perfectly embodied her in words! [face_love]

This was such a lovely character sketch, especially with the compass at the end! I enjoyed every word of it.

    Thank-you! [:D]
