I'm trying to think of a "part 5" of any movie that has been good.

There are very few franchises in which sequels work, even fewer that more than two sequels work.

And it's the complete opposite in quality of another sci-fi/fantasy fifth movie: Star Trek V.

The fifth X men was enjoyable. And HP 5.

Depp's whacky is tired. He needs to do more Finding Neverland type things.

Does anyone think the star wars franchise would have been received differently had it been release chronologically from 1 through 6?

This franchise ran out of steam halfway through the first movie. There are some fun sequences in the following films, but they are a chore to sit through. I still for the life of me can't figure out how what's supposed to be a fun light-hearted pirate movie based on a theme park ride turns into a bloated 169 minute mess by the third film.

What the franchise needs is a gritty Christopher Nolan reboot

Pirates VI: Dead Men Don't Mind Sodomy

That's tough to say. I think a 1977 Lucas made Episode 1 would be unrecognizable from the 1999 Lucas made Episode 1.

Looks like they've found kiera knightly's replacement.

    Kaya Scoderlario anyone?

I don't rate her that much as an actress.
But I don't rate this franchise much anymore.

How is this franchise even still having new entries made?

It should be interesting to see how it fares, since Depp was often considered the biggest driver of the earlier POTC films' success, but now he's on a long string of poorly performing movies.

The fourth installment grossed over a billion dollars worldwide. That's how the franchise is still having installments made. And that seems pretty clear to me.

True, fair enough. I still think the Depp question is relevant, though.

Yeah it wouldn't be a franchise and would have stopped at The Phantom Menace.

Looks like it could be interesting. Of course, On Stranger Tides appeared interesting at first too...

On Stranger Tides looked to be good..... Until you figured out that it used the name and characters of the franchise but had largely nothing to do with the three movies that preceded it.

I look at On Stranger Tides as a movie that tried to do a spinoff and failed miserably (I have no idea if that is what they tried, I just saw the movie and have largely tried to forget about it).

After all the wheels-within-wheels backstabbing and treachery of Dead Man's Chest and At World's Ends, that's not a bad thing. The problem that I had with OST was that Blackbeard was really underwhelming, especially considering that Barbossa was heavily influenced by Blackbeard in the first place. In contrast, Salazar actually looks intimidating.
