    OK,I need help!

I've been looking at Jhonny Deps costume in pictures of him for the latest movie Pirates Of The Carribean(which I'm seeing tomorrow ^_^)

It basically consists of a grimy long sleeved shirt, trousers, boots and bandanna!

I've got the shirt, but I'm not sure how to give it that "I sailed across the sea for treasure, raided a few ships and I hang out with Orlando Bloom sometimes" look that it has!

    Any suggestions?

Also,if you are making some Pirates Of the Carribean costumes of your own, here is the perfect place to share your knowledge and talk about them!

    Peace Out!

    S_S edit: just unlocking :)

I'm making an Elizabeth costume. So far I'm only collecting the correct fabric but I have made the aztec coin out of sculpey. I couldn't come up with any POTC costuming websites but someone on the boards here did give me a link for a POTC costuming mailing list. You might be able to get some help on weathering your costume on there. Go here:

Will's finale costume looks like basically the same garb he's worn for most of the rest of the movie with the russet cape, a few accessories, and the "nice hat" added. From what I can see it consists of:

-off-white blouse, full sleeves, collar, keyhole neck

-brown vest, long length, textured fabric

    -breeches, stockings, shoes

-two wide belts crossed over his chest, probably sword or gun belts, but I can't find a good picture at the moment.

-russet-red cape with long leather ties.

-one Very Large Hat with one Very Large Ostrich Plume.

Here are a couple pictures at different angles

    One, and two

I found these at the excellent http://treasuretrove.cjb.net/

Hope this helps. I have a costume breakdown of most of Elizabeth's gowns that I can upload to my site if anyone's interested, too. :) Not that it's expert, but I enjoyed doing it and would love to share.

There are four different yahoo groups devoted to Pirates of the Caribbean costumes that I have found:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/potccostuming/

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PotC_and_X-Men_Costumes/

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/potc_costumer/

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/POTC_COSTUMING/

The first is by far the largest.

    Costuming sites:

    http://www.geocities.com/blueswordclothing/potc/

    http://www.freewebs.com/potc_costumes/

    Screencap and picture sites:

    http://www.elflady.com/legolasgreenleaf/orlando/potc/oz_cdrom/index.htm

    http://kimera.shadow-dancing.net/potc01.htm

    http://pirates.envy.nu/

And, for anyone who cares, links to the dvd menu screens. Dvd is supposed to be out in December!

    http://www.comingsoon.net/cgi-bin/imageFolio.cgi?direct=Action/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean/DVD&img=

I'd love to see more Elizabeth costume breakdowns, especially for halloween. More information always helps to figure these things out!

Jayne, thanks so much for all the links. I ended up promising to make a friend a Will Turner costume (that can be converted to a hobbit with the addition of different pants) and these are fabulous resources.

Caitlin, for me it's the opposite. ;) I told my friend to convert her Sam's Garb to a random Pirate Suit when we are ready to do PotC Cosplay (I told them I'll be a drunk ***** from the Pirates Island! :D )

That is such a wonderful idea! They are simmilar enough that it wouldn't be that hard.

You're welcome for the links, I figure someone should benefit from my compulsive collection. I'll add in a few more when I get home, and keep adding when I find good ones ;)

Hey guys! Got a question for anyone who's made, or researched, Elizabeth's plum dress-- what kind of fabric did you use? Do we think it's taffeta? I remember Ferd bought some poly fabric off Ebay that Maggie ended up using. I've been going back through the messages on the potccostuming list as much as I can, but man, Yahoogroups really isn't a good setup for costume research. It's a real pain to go back and search for what people have said in the past! I like this format so much better-- one thread for each costume, easy to go and check what people have said before.

Anyway. If anyone has confirmation on what the fabric is, or a good online source, I'd be super-grateful. Thanks!

I don't know exactly what you need for Jack's costume, but get some Three Musketeer's styled boots. One that fold down and you can tuck your pants legs in.

Jaina - I used dupionni silk for my plum dress. From the photos available, it looked like it had slubs and a sheen to it like dupionni does. I had a devil of a time finding the right color, though. I think that costume is one you could debate the on-screen color vs the actual color. I never found the more grape color that many others used. :(

    M.

Mirax, thank you! I love the color. Where did you get your fabric? I've had no luck locally, so I'm scouring Ebay and all my usual online fabric sites.

    I like this site:
    http://costumersguide.com/cr_potc.shtml
(it's by the same person who does the padawan's guide).
There are good shots from the new movie as well as the first one.
(and according to her research, the plum dress probably is dupioni.)

Dharma has dupioni -- that way you could experiment and dye it whatever color you like?

    Hi Jaina,

I actually drove to Fishmans in Chicago a week before Dragon*Con 2003 because my internet hunts were coming up empty. That's also why I ended up sewing in the car and in my hotel room. [face_blush] I'm sorry, but I can't recall the color and the swatches online are not totally accurate. If you have time, you could call and ask for swatches of all their plum/purple shades.

    Hope that helps!
    Regards,
    M.

Yes, Maggie's site has been a great help. I shamelessly stole all of her pattern suggestions for myself!

I briefly considered buying Dharma dupioni and dyeing it, but decided not to because 1) dyeing that much fabric is a really big pain in the rear for me, since I have no washer, 2) I'll agonize over getting exactly the right color, and 3) dupioni loses its sheen and stiffness when you wash it. Which is why I was hoping to find a poly fabric that would work. I know, I know, I know, but I really want to be able to just throw the darn thing in the washing machine.

Mirax, thanks for the info. I'm going to continue looking around here, and hopefully between that and Ebay I'll find something soon. It's driving me crazy, trying to find the "right" color, when the dress looks different in every single picture! I know I should just pick one color and go with it, but it's so hard to choose!

    Thanks for the compliments!

Dupuoini was mostly a guess, because it's slubby.

For my own costume, I used a slubby poly fabric that Ferd found on ebay and kindly gave to me! I'm really happy with it - but I wouldn't know where to find more of it!

Maggie, I really love the fabric your gown is made of. Do you think Ferd might still have the email with the seller's name and such? Maybe I'll ask in her lj.

I'm in the process of doing this one for my best friend, and you're right, it's a hard color to find, but I bought Juicy Plum from silkbaron.com and I bought purple silk dye from DharmaTrading to add more purple to it and it turned out perfect!

That's my research so far if anyone was interested :)
