Not sure if we have seen any in canon... doesn't Luke in ANH talk about the red astromech saying "this r2 unit has a bad motivator"? And we do have Obi-Wan in TCW literally saying (if memory serves correctly) that R2 units were a "dime a dozen."

The Phantom Menace when we are first introduced to R2. Obi-Wan had one in his Jedi starfighter. There may have been others in the background.

R4 is not an R2 unit. She just had an R2 unit dome on her salvaged body.

Semantics, the point isn't whether or not they are technically an R2 or R4, the point is there are a lot of droids that look like R2. R2 is just one of thousands or millions of astromechs that look just like him.

What is the difference between an R2 and an R4 astromech? One has a 2 after the R and the other has a 4 after the R. That is like making a big deal about the distinction between my Logitech keyboard that looks exactly like your Logitech keyboard except instead of a model number of 1234H3 yours is 1234H5. To the naked eye there is no difference except a number printed on the back that no one ever looks at. There is no meaningful difference to anyone except Logitech.

The physical model of the droid and technicalities. I have no idea why you're arguing about semantics.

How many R2 units do we see in the fighters in the Battle of Yavin?

IIRC, a technician even asks Luke if he wants a new one since R2-D2 is pretty beat up. That kinda implies that they're practically disposable.

He might have been talking about a r4 or 5 or 3 etc.

So? Why does it matter if they all look the same. That is the whole point an R2 astromech isn't anything special. There are billions of almost identical astromechs scattered across the galaxy.
