FF:NZ Point of Discussion.

Ok so myself and my flatmates had a good discussion over the weekend over whether or not we (NZ) should become the next state of America.

We came to the conclusion that yes, we'll get rid of the monachy and become one with USA. Why? The benefits of course.

* Boost to the economy: Americans will come to the State of NZ for holidays etc injections Billions into the economy.

* We'll get the choice of about 1 million flavours of chewing gum. Not to mention a Wendy's and Taco Bell on every street corner.

* We'll get more Olympic medals in 2004 than we have in our entire history.

* We'll have an air force

* Cops will have guns

* we'll have a military

* you know those F16's we were going to get, they'll be a thing of the past. We'll have brand new F18's

* Ooh and we'll get air force carriers instead of little frigates to scare people away who enter our waters.

* No one will attack us, why?
Cause we'll have all the big guns and nothing else but sheep and wendy's.

* Life in prison means "Life" in Prison

* We can have Govenors, and senators just like in Star Wars.

* Our dollar value will be more than anyone elses.

* Imagine the money we can inject into academies, education, health, sport anything really.

There's heaps more benefits, I just can't remember them all. I don't think we found a disadvantage.

April Fools was yesterday, SWNZ.

I lived & worked in the US for a year in 97 - 98. There's no way I'd want my country to run like that.

no nothing is worth loosing your national identity especially not taco bell!!

Americans don't like flying, nor are they big travellers. Compare the # of european / asian tourists you see here cf. US travellers.

Chewing gum on footpaths everywhere sucks. Do we need more fast food outlets?

* We'll get more Olympic medals in 2004 than we have in our entire history.

But any achievements by former NZ athletes will be lost while we are supposed to care that "we" won the basketball gold again?

We have an airforce, but one that is suited to our countries needs.

* Cops will have guns

Therefore criminals will be armed more often. Our cops already have guns, but not worn as sidearms. I prefer it this way.

* we'll have a military

We have a military.

* you know those F16's we were going to get, they'll be a thing of the past. We'll have brand new F18's

To do what, shoot Painted Apple Moths into oblivion?

But we have no-where to park them, as the Rangitoto channel isn't deep enough to get them to Devonport.

Big guns didn't deter terrorists from attacking the US. Having nuclear weapons will MAKE us a target.

WHat do they do exactly? An extra 20 MPs due to MMP was hard enough to grasp for most people.

There goes our farming based economy & our export dollars.

Alaska is a removed State of the US. How's that State's academies, education, health, sport anything really?

I'm from the land of the long white cloud and I'm proud to be a kiwi

for a small country with a population a lot less than any major city in the world we have done some fantastic things! New Zealanders have: split the atom, invented the jetboat, become the first to climb everest, won or been place getters in almost every major yachting race in the last 15 years, and succesfully rowed across the atlantic and beaten all the world bigshots!!

 

And we've put velcro to good use!

Have you lived in the US SWNZ?

The country is so big, it's awful - especially things we take for granted. ie. EFTPOS is hard to find. Everyone still pays for everything by cheque.

Personal Liability insurance to cover you in case you get sued -> You pay a years worth of NZ car insurance every month in the US, and (car) insurance is compulsory.

Homeless people everywhere. Hospitals turning away people without medical insurance.

Can't walk on the grass. Can't go into a dairy with bare feet. Can't jaywalk.

Tipping! 25% of your bill. Or each and every drink you buy at the bar.

School shootings. Militia groups.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great things about the USA, but this whole thread is a major case of "grass greener on the other side of the fence".

Try living in the US, then come back here. Believe me you'll come to appreciate the beauties and lifestyle on New Zealand.

I too lived in the States for a year
It was a great and interesting year but would i want to spend the rest of my life as a yank? NO

For a place that talks about have free it was i found it very restrictive
like " No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service"
The number of times i had to go back home to get some shoes because half way to the 7 11 i remembered i was bare foot.
All i was getting was a drink

The 25 cents extra you had to pay some one to pour your beer was terrible. It is their job to do it.

I went swimming at the local pools i was not allowed "by law" to dive in?????
I was over 20 it is my choice
I could guess where the deep end was.

Then the stupid thing in some states it is your choice if you want to wear a helmet on a motorcycle or wear a seat belt. Strange remember you can't dive into the pool.

They don't have meat pies
This cause me great concern at every gas station i stopped at while out of the road it took me ages to find something to eat. all i wanted was my meat pie.

They don't have hokey pokey ice cream never heard of it.

They think New Zealand is part of Aussie anyway. They don't know or understand that there is another country past Australia, thats if they know where Australia is?

Once i was at a baseball game i got asked if i was from Boston when i was in Colorado

they have in the "world" section of the Denver Post an article about Florida

Going back in Sept to visit which will be great but rather be Canadain
Get the green card and still be in the commonwealth.

Also most of their beer is crap
