    I thought it would be interesting to see where people stand now, as the last Political Compass thread's last post was about 3 years ago, on top of which we've got plenty of new people in that time, and so this will also allow for us to see where the Senate is, as a whole.

    The past versions can be found here:
    Political Compass (v. 2.0)
    Political Compass 1.0
    The test itself can be found here:
    http://www.politicalcompass.org/

    In version 2.0, GrandAdmiralJello shared a plot that came from the JCC's thread on this:
    [image=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/grandadmiraljello/polcomp2.jpg]
    And here's the Senate's data for version 2.0. If someone updated their results, I used the most recent one as the final number:
    [image=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v164/lowbacca/compass2.jpg]

    Finally, here is where everyone is using just the data for this thread:
    [image=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v164/lowbacca/compass3.jpg]

    So please feel free to share your own results so we can see where everyone stands in a more numerical fashion.

    So I here I was about 2 years ago--

    [image=http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b222/tleivo/pcgraphpngphp.png]

    And now--

    [image=http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b222/tleivo/pcgraphpngphp-1.png]

    Economic Left/Right: 0.50
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.10

    It's an interesting test, although, many of the questions are frustrating in that, "Agree/Disagree" doesn't really feel like enough. Some questions have a number of issues compounded in them, that I feel like need to be isolated, before saying simply yay or nay.

    It looks like, according to this test, I've grown more libertarian and a little more to the right.

    My old results from like a year ago or so:
    Economic Left/Right: -6.38
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.74

    My new results tonight:
    Economic Left/Right: -7.75
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.72

    So I moved a tiny bit to the left and a tiny bit to the bottom. Hmm....certainly interesting. I don't have the numbers handy from the time i took this test two years and three years ago, but economically I've always been a leftist. The main change I've noticed through the years has been movement from a more authoritarian to a more libertarian outlook.

    In 2006 for the other thread I was at:
    Economic Left/Right: 3.25
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.21

    My new location:
    Economic Left/Right: 1.12
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.15

    So I've apparently moved a bit closer to center economically and I'm continuing to move towards social libertarianism.

    My social axis has been pretty fixed for a long time, though my economic preferences seem to have swung back to the right somewhat from the last time I took it, probably because my dad is employed now and I'm no longer raging against the economic regime, though I tended to be in favor of some pretty strict regulations.

    Cool, I agree some questions really should be more nuanced, but I can understand the limitations.

    Economic Left/Right: -3.88
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.31

    Eh, why can't I copy/paste that thing! Copy yes, paste, no.

    Right where I've always been, smack dab in the middle... Well, economically at least. I was a little surprised to find I was that far down the Libertarian scale. That's what being Canadian will do I guess. Things like Gay Marriage and legal pot are so normal here that you don't even realise they're issues in other places...

    6.62 to the Economic left.
    1.85 towards Social libertarian.

    I believe I'm more economic left because I believe a stable market/economy must be consistently regulated by people who don't have a stake in everything. You can't expect capitalism and a free market economy to maintain itself without inevitably falling into disrepair.

    I've been fairly steady, though I've moderated a bit in my libertarian/authoritarian views.

    2003: Economic Left/Right: -4.25
    Authoritarian/Libertarian: -5.08

    2005: Economic Left/Right: -7.50
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.74

    2009: Economic Left/Right: -7.50
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.23

    2010: Economic Left/Right: -8.12
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.64

    Still, I'm a radical lefty. Woogasm.

    I've taken this before, but I don't think I posted it in the Senate last time.

    Here's where I am today:

    Your political compass
    Economic Left/Right: -3.75

    About the same as I've always been.

    Looks like I didn't do it in '05 but did the '03 test.

    '03 results:

    Economic Left/Right: 4.38

    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.95

    Here's today's results:

    Economic Left/Right: 2.88

    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.54

    Not much shift socially, but some shift economically.

    That seems about right to me. The recession drove nearly everyone a bit to the left on economic issues, although I've always been suspicious of globalism and against financial deregulation.

    Upping this thread now that we have some visuals with this, and to encourage more users to post their results to flesh out the current profile a bit more.

    Mine:

    Your political compass
    Economic Left/Right: 1.12
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.08

    For comparison, my previous measurements (listed in v1.0) were:

    First Time
    Economic Left/Right: -0.50
    Authoritarian/Libertarian: -0.15

    Second Time
    Economic Left/Right: -0.25
    Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.31

    I did some tracking for v1.0 of the thread, and I think I still have that file somewhere at home. I'll see if I can dig it up tonight and post a graph of the results from then.

    However, here is the summary I gave in that thread of the statistical breakdown of the responses:
    If I get the time, I'll try to put together similar statistics for this thread when/if I get the chance.

    I was wondering if you'd do that with the scaling here in the Senate again Kimball. [face_mischief]

    I still haven't had the chance to look for my old file, but I did throw together a quick spreadsheet of all the values to date.

    The mean in the Senate has definitely shifted since I did the same analysis in 2003. Where before the mean was at (-0.55, -3.01), it is currently sitting at (-2.97, -4.10). From what I can see and remember of the previous analysis, this appears to be primarily through the departure of many of the people who scored more to the right and up.

    In fact, I think that this gives a good lesson in perceptions. For example, there are many people here who have accused my brother of becoming even more extreme over the past few years, and yet the test here shows that his scores have actually become less extreme. He went from (7.00, 1.69) to (7.12, 0.56). That shows almost no change on the Economic axis, and a better than 1 point change towards the center on the Social axis. However, because the mean here has shifted by (-2.42, -1.09), it creates the perception that he is more extreme.

    At the same time, where before I was almost exact at the mean on the Economic axis, my new score puts me strongly to the right of our sample. However, most of that shift comes from the mean moving, rather than me moving.

    There's a difference between the extremity of views themselves, and the extremity of one's support for said views.

    "I think X-Men 3 is the best movie ever," is an extreme view expressed in a non-extreme manner.

    "Citizen Kane is the best movie ever, but with so many people liking 3D these days, I think the country is going to tear itself apart and I for one am willing to go to war to defend my conviction!" is an extreme expression of a non-extreme view.
