Just to see proples opinions on the topic. You may dicuss below.
It truly is a mix.
Probably ABY. Simply because there is far, far more content in that era. The top shelf and a half of my bookshelf is BBY. The rest, which is three and a half bookshelves, is ABY. There is much more of it so, even if there's quality stuff in BBY, there's more in ABY simply because there's more overall, whether quality or awful.
Though I read more ABY, there are some BBY era books that I will pick up if they are high quality.
Darn it. Phone's auto-correct messed up the title for the poll.
ABY. Partly nostalgia. Partly because a lot of BBY's stuff is totally dullzone and predictable. You don't really have as many memorable recurring heroes like the Rogue/Wraith Squadron team or villains like Thrawn, Isard or Zsinj in the BBY time.
I'd have to ABY since I love the Rebellion, New Republic, New Jedi Order and Legacy Comic Era.
BBY has good moments in the Old Republic Era and the PT era but not as much as ABY.
0-25 ABY first, then BBY, followed by 30+ ABY in far last.
There's a four year gap!
Yeah, the NJO. I'm kind of mixed on it. At tthis point, I kind of have no strong feelings one way or the other on the NJO, so I left it out.
Can't say I really care. There are great stories and interesting characters that I love in both, as well as awful stories that should've never been written.
There's good and bad content on either end, but ultimately I feel as though I've personally gotten more enjoyment out of the collective assortment of BBY works.
At present the BBY portion of the EU is so dominated by material about the Clone Wars (and the period of decline immediately preceding said conflict) that it is hard to consider it fairly. Everything set during that period labors under the inherent burdens of prequel storytelling - we all know what's going ultimately to happen, who can and cannot die, etc. The majority of the post-Endor material, at least at the time of its respective release, was moving the timeline forward, and therefore had more freedom. So there's a built-in advantage when comparing those two categories.
When you look at material set in the earlier Old Republic eras, where there's far more flexibility in storytelling, there seems to be a marked increase in quality across the board.
TotJ-KotOR 2 is BBY, so BBY for me.
As long as the story is good. So the best of both.
Some BBY material predates the prequels considerably- and is moderately well regarded- the Han Solo Trilogy, the Han Solo Adventures trilogy, the Lando trilogy.
ABY. Mostly post-Endor stuff. But that doesn't mean I don't like any BBY material.
That is too difficult to decide. There are so many books on both the BBY and ABY side that are just outstanding reads that I can't choose one way or another. I suppose there are more books on the ABY side I prefer, but just not enough to make an argument for either side.
BBY books got me back into the EU a few years ago after I had gotten turned off from it in the late 90s/early 00s by the Thrawn Trilogy and Courtship of Princess Leia.
I wasn't sure about voting simply because there is a lot of ABY EU that I haven't read, and among that I have read, there have been good and terrible books in both eras.
I agree that both eras have their share of good and bad books. I first got hooked into the EU by the ABY books, but I eventually became disinterested (particularly after the Legacy of the Force books). I think a large part of this is that I was hoping for some kind of eventual resolution, or explanation of how the Force is now balanced. I've since learned to favor BBY simply because of the variety of topics available, and love learning more about the Sith prior to the movies.
so do I
Its hard to pick. I enjoy both eras and while I have a lot more ABY books, I enjoy BBY era books as well and I think there should be a lot more of them. I voted for BBY overall though.
Before. Legacy, the comics, might be my favorite setting but there's just more to work with and far less stupidity in BBY work.
BBY. Han Solo at Star's End. Han Solo's Revenge. Han Solo and the Lost Legacy. Lando Calrissian and the Mindharp of Sharu. Lando Calrissian and the Flamewind of Oseon. Lando Calrissian and the Starcave of ThonBoka. The Paradise Snare. The Hutt Gambit. Rebel Dawn.
And a whole bunch of SWAJ short stories as well.
I can't pick between the two... ABY probably has a larger quantity of quality stories, but it also has a larger quantity of terrible stories.
