I agree with Everton. It's an issue because that is what the thread is about. One could say about all the forums: "It's just lightsabers and social threads, go read a book". That doesn't change the fact that this thread is here soley to discuss this issue.

 

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. If it changes, it changes. Is that going to stop people from coming here? No. It's not as garrish as some people would make it seem.

Well I might be being naive, but it's too narrow. I don't like the forum not filling the screen. The space either side seems wasted.

Yes, agreed. One of the very first things I remember learning about web design is not to waste screen real estate by adding unnecessary sidebars. Horizontal bars aren't too bad because they only cost you a couple of lines of text, but if you put something down the side of a page, every line of text from there on down will be narrower, and it's both unaesthetic and irritating to readers to have to keep their eyes flicking from side to side as they read.

The actual boards area in that link seems to be designed for 600x800, but monitors are good enough these days that most people use a higher resolution than that.

Also, for what it's worth, another of the primary rules I remember learning about programming is when something works, you generally want to leave it alone. If the current layout of the boards is acceptable to most people, don't touch it, because the majority of alternate layouts you come up with will not be satisfactory to most viewers.

 

My problem with the new design is that it takse a long time to load up! I can't just check something real quick, I have to siiiit theeereee...

 

^^ That might be just because those sample pages are one personal webspace? Maybe?

However I will say that the speed (for me) that the JC pages load up is very appealing. Other forums can take an age to load up a page... really disheartening when you want to get a quick reply in. But the JC is quick.

No small part of that are the underlying IGNboards, which are pretty fast.

i have to go with No as the new layout on the main site is slower to load and it's harder to find what you want on it :-(

Don't change it unless you Make the page scalable. I don't browse at a full browser window, and the new look doesn't fit the small window I use.

It's too narrow. Scalable is good. make the narrow size you have the minimum and let it scale from that.

No change. I tend to keep mine at 800 x 600, because I have a laptop, not a monitor and these aging eyes aren't so good at seeing anything smaller...

No. I don't like the new TFN design anyway (in fact, I hardly ever even go to the main page anymore), so please don't change my favorite web hangout.

I thought the main page needed a face lift but the forums look alot better than the old main page IMO, so I'd say 'No' to changing the look. It wouldn't ruin anything for me if the forums are changed but I'd like it better if they werent changed.
