There is already a discussion of the Empire in the ST. Here is a poll to see what people think. I couldn't think of any other choices so I hope this suffices.

If you choose "something new" please explain.

I chose something new. Here's my explanation:

As in the case of many fallen empires or dictatorships, those once under oppression now vye for power, realizing there was no replacement and that they still long for order and stability. That quest for order and stability comes at a cost and the galaxy is in chaos. From the ashes come a new breed of dark side users that hope to resurrect the Sith. Eventually, the splintered worlds come together to form a New Republic.

Weakened Empire that is gainign new strength!

Empire has a military chain on command, shipyards and a functional Navy scathered across the Galaxy after ROTJ. Losing #1 and #2 was a major blow but not fatal.

Rebels threw everything they had at the Empire during the Battle of Endor..arguably lost more than half their fleet (including 1 satellite dish). No way they gain control of everything politically, economically and socially right after.

Glad to see you made this poll. I think the questions work. Although it would be nice if a mod corrected the spelling. :)

They're still understandable, I think. But I'm being picky because I haven't had enough coffee yet.

Anyway, I voted choice 3, but I also like 2 and think it's just as likely they go that direction.

I have to admit that with the right story, #2 could work as well. However, to me they wouldn't really be able to take the lead but rather be used. I think that a "remnant" could actually come from those trying to establish power from the free oppression. And I suppose they could take possession and control over some of the military ships and gear.

But to me that would still be something new.

My gut says for 30 years the Rebels/New Republic has been going toe to toe w/ the Empire until something puts the Empire back on top during EP VII...likely its an alliance with a 3rd party...

To follow up on a Empire after ROTJ. Using a contemporary example, and please this is an example and I apologize for anyone this might offend...Compare the Empire to the US military. If the White House was attacked (losing #1 and #2 in the chain of command in the process), does the US military as a whole roll over and bow down? Heck no, they'll obviously hit back harder 10 fold. I wouldnt be surprised that the years following ROTJ that we'd see an more ruthless side of the Empire hell bent on revenge.

    Cheers, K

I kind of wish there was an all of the above option or that it was multiple choice because I can see a combination of 2 and 3. The main core of the Empire that existed in the OT but has been weakened by both external and internal forces combined with several smaller Imperial Remnant type establishments, maybe former governors, generals or admirals who have turned warlord, thinking that they're the one who can return the Empire to its former glory.

Or they meet up with a new Sith lord who then destroys them with his/her more powerful army.

Well, it looks like 2 and 3 are going to have the most votes, which suggests most see some combo of the two.

19-2 think the Empire will come back in some form.

    That's a strong early trend.

Having the Empire in episode 7 does not cheapen or ruin the end of Return of thd Jedi. Even at 11 years old I walked out of the theater thinking "Wait till the rest of the Imperial fleet hears about this. I can't wait to see the next one!"

Having the sith come back after Anakin fulfilled the prophecy... THAT cheapens and ruins the end of Return of the Jedi.

I am perplexed by the people that hate on the Empire in E7 in one breath but champion a return of the Sith in the next breath.

    I voted option 2

I would prefer something new, but it looks like we're going to be getting the Empire in some form.

As long as it's not option #1.

Empire and Republic were the same thing.

The OT movies should have done a better job of illustrating that, I think PT and Clone Wars made it clear.
