If you have the ability to create a poll in a forum, it would say "create poll" right next to "post new topic".

I even believe some forums have it set as is the case within the Census forum, for only VIPs, Moderators, Managers, & Administrators to post polls :D .

It is possible to post polls in the Lit forum, but I don't know where else.

A long time ago all you would ever see is polls in forums. The mods got sick of it and took away the privilage completely.

From what I've seen, polls have only been active in FF areas. Not in any of the JC boards.

In the Games forum, if you want a poll, you can ask a mod* to enable polls momentarily so you can have it posted, and then they will disable new polls again.

Or ask a mod to post your poll in the census forum.

    * The mod will only oblige if it's a "good", well thought out poll, and would not be better served as a thread.

`A long time ago all you would ever see is polls in forums.'

It must have been a long time ago, because I don't recall people spamming the forums with polls.

i think the census forum is something most people, overall, never visit. and it's a shame that a lot of good polls are wasted in that forum.

I agree, epic. I love the Census Forum. As far as polls in the 3SA, we encourage users to PM one of the mods for an idea and we'll bounce it around. We try to drop them in occasionally. But trust me when I say that the poll feature was always very abused.

strangely enough the most interesting in the Census Forum isn't a poll.... but the tournament....

There's nothing a pol can do that a regular thread can't. But there are many things a thread can do that a poll can't. Polls discourage discussion and encourage, just clicking a choice and leaving, not contributing your thoughts.

agreed, and I think that the reason is that only Adms. can post polls. How about doing away with that, seeting rules like "No more than two polls per user at one time".

Sure, they can. But in reality, they don't.

Right, 90% of what happens in a poll is people just coming in, clicking there answer and leaving, without posting their thoughts. They don't do anything a normal thread can't do stimulate discussion, all they do is make quantifying the answer easier.

    i agree.

it depends on the topic of the poll, really. most of the times a thread will do the job better, some times a poll is better suited, if only to provide the quantitive answer.

all i'm really saying is that sometimes a poll is a good option, instead of a thread, and that they're wasted in the census forum.

whether the problems associated with abuse of the polls (what constitutes "abuse"?) outweighs the benefits of having them activated is the question, i guess.
