I'm sure the pope does not remember the final years of Pope John Paul II with much fondness, if in fact he can still remember them at all.

Didn't he also cite lack of strength just before killing Mace Windu?

I'm guessing I'm going to have to change my avatar.

Seriously, I hope another orthodox individual gets elected.

If age weren't already killing him, I'd say that it must be killing Ratzinger that so many Bavarian and Austrian Catholics have largely given up on the church and the institution of marriage. I hardly know anyone under the age of 50 in Austria who has bothered to marry. They live together for decades and have kids and maybe if they think about it go to Catholic mass with their aging parents once a year on Christmas eve.

If they don't elect a Latin American pope they're making a huge mistake. If they elect an Italian pope it will be a toss up whether Ratzinger, or Catholicism itself dies first.

I do believe it will be someone from the southern hemisphere, and it'll probably stay that way for a while, maybe one or two Americans thrown in there.

Yeah -- it's going to have to be a Latin American, I think. Institutionally, it's pretty much the best play.

Which is why I expect they'll go with an Italian.

He's either giving up being the pope for Lent, or it's a big April fool's joke.

He's not actually retiring. He's dissolving the Vatican, crowning himself emperor, and forming the first Galactic Empire.

It does seem that way, but apperantly the average reign for the Pontiff is 7.5 years. Most of us grew up knowing JPII, who had the third longest reign, 26 years.

How cool would it be if the next pope is young, with modern ideals, and he ushered in a new era of change in the Catholic Church - calling for acceptance (not just tolerance) of homosexuals, allowing priests to marry and letting women into the priesthood?

Yeah I agree that that would be a problem - but then I don't believe in lifelong terms for any authority figure - or religion for that matter lol.

I don't know. One of the reasons they went with Ratzinger was that he was old, so they could placate Latin Americans by saying yes, he's European, but he's old... so you'll get a shot soon!

I don't know how they could go with an Italian. I mean, it's the traditional choice and you know how I stand for tradition in all things, but it'd be really, really dumb, even for the Curia.

Well, one pundit on either CNBC or BBC News (I was channel-hopping at the time) said they might go for an African since that is the area where the Church is growing the most.
