    Beginning After End

Henden Datch stood, watching the stars out of the Infinite Dream's panoramic bridge display. It was a full 360 degree display that wrapped around the command deck of the Defender-class Star Destroyer for a tactical edge in the event of a battle. Henden was deep in thought. He was peripherally aware of the station operators executing various commands and the captain of the ship, barking them endlessly to his subordinates. He wished his father was still commanding this proud ship; that his dear father was still alive and scolding the way he remembered him as a kid. It seemed simple coincidence he had been assigned to this ship. So it seemed, but who knew whether it was Luke's intention to have him serve on his father's ship.

Unfortunately, it was not so. During the war, the Infinite Dream had suffered heavy battle damage, including the utter destruction of the bridge. Henden still thought about it. Despite his training as a Jedi, he couldn't help but become overwhelmed with emotion when he realized how helpless his father had been. A barrage of plasma missles, melting through the quadrouple-bonded durasteel that protected every Star Destroyer of this type's bridge. And then, nothing but silence as his father and his bridge crew were flash-frozen and died. He had hardly even gotten to know his father. At a young age, Henden had left for the Jedi Academy upon being discovered as Force-Sensitive. Although he had maintained as much contact with his father as possible, the war had prevented him from seeing his father very much. His mother had died while he was still young at the hands of pirates. Henden hardly remembered anything about her other than her eyes. Those yellow-brown eyes that always seemed to say, everything's gonna be just fine. But that's all. How Henden would have loved to fight the Yuuzhan Vong. To avenge his father's death and destroy the worthless enemy who had taken his only remaining parent.

Again, it was not so. At the beginning of the war he had only been eleven years old. It was a year after the war's end and Henden was still only sixteen. The war had ended before he'd gotten his turn! But, thankfully, a year earlier, none other than Kyp Durron had chosen him as an apprentice, and Luke had sent the pair of them off to do the Jedi's will across the galaxy where they were needed. After the war, Luke had established that the Jedi would return to their manner of opereation similar to that of the Old Jedi. When needed, a Jedi Knight, or a Master-Apprentice team would be sent to negotiate or, if necesary, fight to keep the peace and uphold Jedi ideals.

Henden still wondered at his luck of being "chosen" as Kyp's Apprentice. But then again, he had tried very hard, and it had been a decision made before-hand as well. The day he heard Kyp was coming to the Jedi Academy on Kashyyk to select an apprentice, he had decided it would be him. Not only was Henden extremely strong in the force, but he was unbeatable with a lightsaber. He was a natural, but also ran through practice routines in every spare minute, training to exhaustion and strengthening himself to fight battles that he knew awaited him. At the Academy, he could best any other student, even the older ones when he was only twelve. On the rare occasions that he saw Luke, Luke had advised him to be vey careful of his strength and that it was in many ways a curse more than a gift. Henden had even been privilidged enough to spar with the Jedi Master on one occasion when word of his reputation had reached Luke's ear. Luke had whipped Henden on the sparring mat repeatedly, but had complemented him thouroghly on his skill with a blade. Henden had found out later, after Kyp had already chosen him that Luke had intended for Kyp to train Henden. He had decided on this because of Kyp's experience with handling power and how wrong things can go.

"Hey, kid," cames Kyp's smooth, rehearsed voice from behind him.

Shaken abruptly out of his contemplati
