Quix-- I hope you're always shooting in RAW, and even if you are, you're losing a lot if you shoot in monochrome mode. If you take an image shot in standard mode and convert it to B/W and then shoot it in monochrome, you'll see that it's not the same thing. If you use NX 2, you can freely change back and forth from the different picture modes, but not many people use it, as compared to Photoshop.

    Nice work, Kiki-Gonn :).

I didn't know that about shooting monochrome in digital - as I said, there's a learning curve involved.

    Very true.

When you shoot in monochrome mode, you're letting the camera do all the decision making for you. If you're shooting jpeg, it won't matter what converter you use, because it'll always open up in monochrome. In RAW, it will open in color in everything but NX 2. You must be shooting in jpeg then.

No, I'm shooting in RAW. I learned about the RAW/JPEG issue before I bought the camera (and I use NX2 to view the images; I actually saw what you were talking about when a friend of mine opened the images on his Mac using a different program).

Excellent :). I just assumed that you were using something other than NX 2. I'm a big fan of it. The conversions in it are still better than anything else, as well they should be. I find NX 2 to be easy to use for almost everything I want to do, which truthfully isn't all that much.

Now, I *don't* know about this jpeg vs raw issue. What's all this, then?

If you tell your camera that you want to shoot the image in JPEG format, you'll save on space, but you will also lose image detail (less information is being captured by the camera). The file sizes are a lot smaller, so many people think that it's an advantage to shoot in JPEG, because they get more distance out of a memory card, and you probably wouldn't be able to tell when printing a 4x6.

RAW is 12 or 14 bit, jpeg is 8. The colors you can get max out in the thousands on jpeg, and in the millions in RAW, particularly with 14 bit (which is what I use). With cards having such large capacities today and for cheap, there's no reason to use jpeg in my view. Maybe for a test shot, but that's all. My card is 16 GB, which I think is about as big as you should ever use at once. The larger the card and the more you put on it, the greater the risk of losing everything all at once.

When I convert a full RAW image to a TIFF file, the resulting file is about 70 MBs or so, making it possible to print large sizes. The largest I've printed so far is 36x24. Since the D90 and D700 (what Quix and I use, respectively) both have 12 megapixels, I think it's about the same. The one difference is that the D90 is limited to 12 bit RAW images.

When you shoot in jpeg, you're allowing the camera to make most of the processing decisions for you. In RAW, many of those decisions are changeable. If I don't like the white balance, I can just change it in RAW. In jpeg, it's cooked in.

    Also, a fun RAW trick:

In RAW, more light hitting the sensor means more visual information. So if you routinely overexpose your RAWs (letting more light on to the sensor) by say, a stop or two (always adjusting based on the lighting situation to make sure you're not blowing out your highlights) and then use LightRoom to bring the exposure back down to normal you end up with an image with better saturation, more realistic colors, better detail in the shadows and significantly less noise.

    Oh RAW. God bless it.

This past weekend I did a photoshoot for one of my friends. She has Padme's Lake Gown and wanted some pretty pictures in it. We went down to Balboa Park and managed to get there right during Golden Hour.

She needed to replicate the promo photos of Padme for a Rebel Legion project, so we spent a good deal of time on that.

I'm kicking myself in retrospect for not ensuring that the background was level, but as she's going to be cropped out of it for the project, I'm not too upset.

Is there a way to edit RAW files without PhotoShop-type software? I used a high quality jpg setting on my SLR during my Eurotrip because I wanted to be able to edit them with Picasa (the best photo editing software I have).

I'll get a few of my pictures up shortly...finally finished sorting through them all.

Ah, a 40D :). Were you using the 28-135mm, Rachel? Watch those overexposed highlights. The golden hour is actually a rough time to work with if you don't watch your subject(s) carefully, as I learned in May.

Is there a way to edit RAW files without PhotoShop-type software

Sort of. It depends on whether the program recognizes the RAW file type. It won't be anything remotely like Lightroom, Photoshop, Aperture, etc. Download a free trial of any of those programs.

DLB is definitely right about pulling down the exposure. I do that often.

Here are a few of my better pictures. Nothing too spectacular, but they were a lot of fun to take.

KW, I've thought about getting a DSLR for a while now. Since my camera was recently stolen, this might just be the opportunity I was waiting for. :p Although I was very attached to the super-portability of my old camera...

Amazing! Can you tell me exactly where these were taken?

Great shot, although I'm pretty sure this is Riomaggiore, not Manarola. Cinque Terre is awesome.

Thanks. :) Yeah,I think you're right, that is Riomaggiore. [face_blush] Cinque Terre is awesome, I'd love to spend more time there. It was pouring the day I got there and most of the trails between the villages were closed. I definitely need to get back there.

You're more than welcome. :) I've never traveled outside the USA, so the closest I've been to an Eiffel Tower is the (not full scale) replica they've got in Vegas. :p

Don't get me wrong people are fun to take pictures of cause the right picture presents itself only for a moment but landscapes are easier. I have taken pictures for several fanforce events and only the good ones come after several hundred bad ones. And even those are accidental. Even when you try to make a good shot happen with kids or adults it rarely does.
But that one great shot is worth it all the terrible ones. Regardless of subject. And thankfully digital allows the crap to be thrown away and makes it alot cheaper.
