That doesn't suprise me at all. Most people fail to realise that Star Wars was never popular with critics, and even ANH had its share of detractors. Once ANH became a blockbuster most of the naysayers started backtracking, and even then the majority disliked the sequels. Its the fans that gave the films their cult status. The prequels have this terrible reputation but do you know what the only difference between their reception now and the OT's reception then? The media, and in particular the internet. The prequel backlash, especially on TPM, was blown way out of proportion to the point where it simply became satirical. The OT had its accusations of racism, just as TPM did, and all sorts of similar scandals that the PT endured, but because their was no mass global media to distort it, nothing big really became of it. The PT will live on because of the children who are seeing it now, just as the OT has lived on because of the children who saw it then and are now adults who praise it. Think about that. Rolling Stone may think ROTS sucks but the 12 year olds watching the film as you read this think it is awesome and in ten years when they are grown up, the PT will have a different colouring than it does now.
