Proposal - Ignorance as bannable offense

I would like something cleared up:

My understanding is that saying a book is poorly written is allowed, and saying that the author writes poorly is not allowed. Though they both seem like the same thing to me.

 

Generally, "X wrote this poorly" would be allowed. "X is an idiot because he wrote it this way" would not be.

One is a commentary on the author's writing. The other is a personal attack on the writer. It's the same distinction between saying to a fellow poster "I think your argument is silly" and "I think you're an idiot."

 

Havac hits it on the head, as usual.

You're more than welcome to comment that "X really didn't do a good job on Y story, especially how X handled characters A and B was very bad." There's plenty of that in Lit, actually. On the other hand, "X is a moron" or "X clearly doesn't understand Star Wars at all" or "X clearly hates Star Wars and is trying to destroy it" or "X is teh suxx0rs!!!11!!!one!" are not legitimate.

There's no reason to take a complaint and make it personal like that. It's the latter that we moderate, not the former. If you're making a legitimate commentary on an author's failings as you see them, that's completely all right with us. Turning that into attacks on the credibility, character, or artistic integrity of a creative is another thing entirely.

No matter how many times I read about this scenario, it still makes me laugh.

 

Is there some sort of point to be made so that we can have an actual discussion? Make it or don't post.

 

I think the point, exemplified by your above post, is that people should perhaps chill out.
