I don't think the main critisism against the Hobbit is that it isn't like LOTR, quite the opposite. The main critisism is that Peter Jackson tried to transform a 300 page children's book into another epic film trilogy, while sacrifising the spirit of the book.

 

It's not "a bashing movie", but they did make videos about all the Hobbit movies and I'd say they're pretty spot-on. At least the first one they liked pretty well.

 

I think some parts of the Hobbit trilogy are definitely more like a children's movie compared to LOTR, this scene in particular:

See that was a major plus for me. I love the book, but I think Tolkien himself wouldn't have minded the tone change (he was going to rewrite the book to better suit LOTR anyway so we know it was at least on his mind).

 

I don't think it is the right thread to discuss that (no matter that I love the Middle Earth Universe) but I should clarify my arguments. The "critics" don't say that. They say: a difference from LOTR, these movies have/don't have .. whatever it is. So, no matter that they DECLARE that they don't expect this to be like LOTR, actually is what they really do, because they compare the movies to LOTR and why do that if the person doesn’t expect to see the same/similar thing? Sounds familiar, isn't it? Meh, I heard or maybe is right to say, read from the same people that the AUJ is awful because the dwarves look stupid, look the same and only eat and sing. Well, I guess I read some other book, really, because in my version they were exactly that in the beginning. Don't get me wrong Hobbit is exceptional book for children but obviously Jackson wanted to make a real prequel to the epic story (and it couldn't be the same as LOTR in any moment) than adapting the book, because he included parts of the Appendices of LOTR related to the story of Erebor and etc. I don't think the main core of the book is different: yes, it has the color palette and the tone of AUJ, not the grim elements of the next 2 movies, but the main ideas are there: that the little people can be real heroes, that the greed is big sin and that there are many things far more important than the gold and the pride. Yes, some of the added parts are really dark and scary, I agree, still most of them they are not invented by Jackson, they are part of the Middle Earth story. Speaking of that, I like the scene with the golden statue, because it looks fair to the style of the book. But no, Jackson shouldn’t do that, we knows it better.
But still, this is another topic to discuss. May point was that this kind of arguments sounds too close to the arguments against the prequels.

I am so stoked for this movie. The pictures look amazing. Hope to see the actors/actresses doing fun stuff like Daisy, John and Oscar were last year.

 

New Star Wars fireworks spectacular at Disney's Hollywood Studios. And yes, plenty of Prequel stuff included.

At least the author didnt go the route of the tired cliche bickering routine. It's one of my least favorite things in the entire SW universe and EU writers have had a bad tendency to overplay it - even in the new canon stuff (the main Star Wars comic is filled with cringe-worthy Han-Leia interaction, IMO)

Roll call: Are there any other PT-loving, TFA-deriding folks around here who are genuinely enthusiastic for Episode VIII? Provided Disney doesn't straightjacket Rian Johnson, there's about a 100% chance that this movie will be, at the very least, legitimately good, and, based on the writer/director's laudable output, a 90% chance that it will be superlative.

Episode VIII could be The Wrath of Khan to TFA's Motionless Picture.
