Didn't say he was. I'd lean towards agreeing with your interpretation, although I certainly get the impression he didn't think the PT was as good as he'd hoped. He sure never gave the PT anywhere near the praise he gave TFA, which he said was "really great" & that he "loved it".

About that film I couldn't agree more. I get the feeling he thought each subsequent movie improved a bit. Again, I agree with him.

Thanks. I actually did do some digging, but the only photos I found (including at Jedi Temple) are too low resolution to read the text.

 

So, where are the prequel trilogy fans opining about Rogue One etc here exactly? I'm very interested to read their opinion. In particular members such as Alexrd and Qui-Riv-Brid..

Well I have to largely agree with this article:

Rogue One certainly in Lucas terms finds a lot of it's origins between the PT itself and TCW SW in other genres.

I certainly think it's very possible as a movie it's going to be far more in line in many aspects with I-VI than TFA's entertaining but overtly nostalgia fueled story. In this case having the "old" designs make sense because it's actually set then and there but it looks like they will have more new designs in the "past" than the "present".

Go figure!

What TFA really lacked was going to truly different places and doing some world building. In his quest to so retell the kind of story that ANH did almost 40 years ago JJ either deliberately or by default actually didn't do what ANH did and bring new environments to the screen that in turn inform us about the characters who live there.

Lots of "RE" words can describe TFA but as well as remembrance the other key word is regression.

Rogue One might be set in the past but it looks like it's going to push the story forward on multiple levels that TFA simply wasn't interested in doing.

Now I still think it would have been better if the palm tree planet looked more fantastical rather than just the Maldives where it was shot but at least it's somewhere different.
