Happy Anniversary to Columbus, Ohio.

On this day 12 years ago, you started a tradition. You hosted the United States men's national team, and they beat Mexico 2-0 in World Cup Qualifying. This tradition was repeated with the same scoreline in 2005 and 2009 during World Cup Qualifying, and during the knockout round of the 2002 World Cup. We're all hoping it will be repeated, once again, in September.

 

Best thing to ever happen in Columbus.

Happy Anniversary to the Columbus Crew

On this day six years ago, you signed the greatest set piece maestro MLS history - Guillermo Barros Schelotto. GBS went on to lead the Crew to three major trophies, including back-to-back Supporters Shields.

 

Happy Anniversary to Major League Soccer and the "Original Ten" Franchises.

On this day in 1994, MLS announced the ten franchises for the inaugural 1996 seasons: The Columbus Crew, DC United, New England Revolution, NY/NJ Metrostars (Now Red Bull), Tampa Bay Mutiny (RIP), Colorado Rapids, Dallas Burn (now FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Now Sporting KC), Los Angeles Galaxy, and San Jose Clash (Now either Houston Dynamo or San Jose Earthquakes, depending on your point of view).

 

Happy Anniversary to the L.A. Lakers!




On this day in 2010, in a game in which they were down by 13 at one point in the 3rd quarter, the Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics in game 7 of The Finals to clinch their 2nd consecutive title, the 5th title during the 2000's, and the 16th overall in the history of the franchise. A gritty, defensive effort this was (final score: 83-79, Kobe goes 6-24 from the field, the Lakers in total shooting 33% from the field... Boston shot 41%), and to date is the most nerve wracking/stressful/beautiful game I've seen the Lakers play. To have finally witnessed this for myself (as opposed to my father for instance, in '85 & '87), a triumph over Boston in June (in L.A. to boot), is incredibly satisfying... an almost indescribable feeling of sports bliss.

 

Incidentally, this was also the day that Bill Simmons had a frontal lobotomy...

Of course, it would be the season AFTER that when I started following MLS, and yet another season later until I fully became a Crew fan.
