I've always wondered and just finally decided to see if anyone knew.

What was the purpose of the red force field barriers that were in the corridor that delayed OBK from helping QGJ in the duel w/ DM?

    Plot device.

In-universe though, here's an excerpt from Inside the Worlds of The Phantom Menace:

Attesting to the Naboo respect for tradition, the number of laser doors is a deliberate reference to an ancient Naboo legend, in which Chaos is held back by six impenetrable gates.

Laser doors lock into position in response to potentially lethal oiwer outputs that occur intermittently during plasma activation process.

Probably to add a little more suspense to the sequence and give the viewer a little time to think about what may happen next, IMO.

Just to be annoying and ask stupid questions... if the gates are impenetrable, why do they need six, when all they would need was 1 impenetrable gate?

What I really don't understand about that is, why didn't Obi-Wan just Force Speed through those barriers. He's a Jedi, he could probably know when the fields are going to open and close.

    He should have gotten in.

Or slice the sides where the laser fields are emitting from. If a lightsaber can cut thru a blast door, why not the metal where the laser fields are emitting from?

    Exactly.

But MEH. It's a movie, he is supposed to not make it. So, there is nothing we can do.

No doubt to add that question of "what if" the laser barriers didn't come between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. Obi-Wan was trying to desperately make it to Qui-Gon so he wouldn't have to contend with Darth Maul alone.

On Obi Force-speeing through the doors:

Nick Gillard has given us an answer, in that Obi was simply too tired to do it. Plus, what if he overshot, and went flying into the pit?

As for slicing the doors, would you go cutting into high-energy devices that you had no particular knowledge of? I wouldn't, and it doesn't seem like Maul, Qui, and Obi have much interest in it either.
