Question about a line from ESB

In ESB, this bit of dialogue, actually, what Threepio says, has always sorta confused me. When nobody knows where Luke is, and Han is inquiring about it at Echo Base, the conversation goes something like this:

Threepio: Excuse me sir, might I inquire what's going on?

Han: Why not?

Threepio: Impossible man. Come along Artoo...etc.

Now, maybe I'm overlooking the obvious, or I'm an idiot, but I just don't get the "Impossible man" line. Can anyone help?

 

I think 3P0 was trying to befriend Han, but couldn't break through Han's shell.

 

Han was answering his question of "Might I inquire..." by saying why not. Threepio never technically asked him what was going on, just if he could ask what was going on. So Han said sure and walked off.

 

thanks salty. that makes a little more sense. the-dork-knight, i got that part, it was just the "impossible man" part that threw me. thanks.

 

Threepio said "Might I enquire what's going on?" as an overly polite way of simply saying "What's going on?" Instead of answering the question Han said that, yes he could ask what was going on. Threepio then meant "impossble man" as in Han was very difficult to deal with.

 

Solo hated Threepio and did what he could to bug Threepio.

 

It means that Han was an "impossible man" to get along with.

 

Han answered 3PO's question with "Why not", basically making 3PO ask it again...

 

Threepio was just frustrated with Han.
