I've bought two starter boxes. One was the AotC one that came with the game mat, two decks, dice etc, and the other the ESB starter box that came with the same stuff.

I'm just wondering if all the cards in those boxes are the same? That is, if I went out and got another of the ESB boxes, would I get all the same cards, or is there some variety in them?

    Thanks,
    Brian

Each 2-player starter box (and the LS/DS starter decks for that matter) are pre-constructed and have the same cards in them for each of the different releases.

I thought that was the case, since it is true with most of the boxed sets from games like these. But that leads me to another question:

How do they keep the rare cards they include in the set rare? I think my ESB set had a rare Chewbacca and Mara Jade. Is it harder to get those cards in boosters then, in order to keep the rarity?

Yes, you have it exactly right. The rarity is tied to the rarity in booster packs.
