question about vader's severed hand

would the battle ended differently if luke didn't cut off vaders hand and when vader picked up the Emperor from behind how would things have turned out? Would vader have lived?

 

No...the Emporer's force lightening penetrated through Vader's armor. Before this happens, Vader clearly has everything under control. Remember, without that suit, Vader would be dead...

 

I think it might have ended differently for another reason- Luke saw that Vader's hand was mechanical like his own, whick snapped him out of his frenzy. Luke was reminded, as he also was at the cave, that he could easily become this monster.

If he had not cut off Vader's hand, this revelation may never have happened, and Luke would have killed Vader and then become Darth something or other.
