I'm going to back to school this semester. Im thinking about avionics. I like working with my hands and something that makes decent money. Ive gotten a lot stuff from counselors, advisors, professors, etc but was still wondering...

Once being certified, where does a tech work out of? Is it a maintenance strip, a private airstrip, a dedicated repair shop (like they have for computers, but for avionics), or do you work out at the airport from a maintenance hangar, or what sort facility does a tech typically work out of?

Upon completion of certificate or degree plans, how long typically is it between such time and actually finding a job? Is it a couple of months, or is it more around eight to ten months, or how long typically does it take? What is the most common starting salary for bench techs (hourly and annual), and how difficult is it to work ones way up the ladder once they do start working?

I'm not in that field, so I'm not going to offer advice. But I will first say congrats and good luck.

You should share your experiences here. It could help others that might stop by the thread that will eventually have the same questions as you *once* had. Anything from the textbooks you used, the type of lab work you experience, interesting insights you run across. And then later, your job search. Etc, etc.
