In the Empire Strikes Back, the rebels are lodged on Hoth and they have a defensive shield covering their part of the world. Now am I just assuming, or do those shields form an inverted bowl protecting them? because somehow all of the imperial ground attack forces suddenly were inside. where they commenced the bombing of the shield generators. How in blazes did they get in the shield perimeter?

The shield was like an umbrella.

Well if you dont mind 'WykdJedi' I would like to ask a question...

How does Mace die? Does Boba slice him up as Windu did to Jango?

The rebels' shield is probably like the Gungans'. It's strong enough to deflect any bombardment, but solid objects moving slowly can pass through it. Vader orders General Veers to land beyond the energy shield, but even if the shield extends all the way to the ground the walkers can pass through it because they can move as slowly as necessary. Flight vehicles move too quickly and cannot pass through.

Hmm... a practical explanation for walkers....

Also, for the Gungan shield (and presumabley for the Echo Shield) nothing that floats goes through the shield. Maybe the shield blocked all fast moving objects (to counteract blasters and missiles) but also block against replosolift tech. No AATs went through the gungan shields, no STAPs went through the gungan shield, and no TIEs went through the echo shield. The gungans boomas weren't thrown threw the shields (those catapults they had should have gone that far, at least), so maybe they couldn't go throw either. The echo shield was dropped to let the Ion Cannon fire threw.
