why did in empire strikes back did luke go in the cave . and fight himself ?

 

Luke was told not to go into the cave with weapons. That was the test. The fact that Luke went into the cave showed that Luke was afraid and fear is a path to the dark side. Now at that point in Luke's training, Luke was frightened of Vader so when he was fighting the apparition of Vader in the cave he was really fighting himself. This is revealed as Vader's face-mask is blown away to reveal Luke's face. It was a metaphor.

This is just my opinion of course but it's how I understand it.

It was a test for Luke to see what would come from his using fear, anger and hate against Vader. That he would, in fact, become him. Yoda went through a similar test himself years earlier and saw what he could become if he continued to fight the war the way he was.

 

I believe it was to show that Luke had the same capacity for evil acts his father did. It was likewise a test of faith which he failed.

 

He'd been drinking very heavily the night before.

 

What? I have absolutely no idea what The Empire Strikes Back is. I might know what you were talking about if this was the Classic Trilogy section, but this is the Prequel Trilogy we're discussing. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

 

Just wondering when did yoda go through a similar test? Not a big EU reader so I was just interested

 

I'm told it's in TCW Season 6, but I haven't seen that season yet.
