I am hoping to find an explanation for how to link to stories on the fora and are there other ways to do it.

I?ve found out that there are different addresses that lead to the same thing. For example, I have a story listed at this address in Before the Saga at:

    (Link Type #1)
    http://boards.theforce.net/before_the_saga/b10475/23562370/p1/?25

But the same story is also listed at:

    (Link Type #2)
    http://boards.theforce.net/Message.aspx?topic=23562370&brd=10475&start=23660503

They both go to the same place. However, Type #2 has been more useful to me when I?m sending a link to something that is buried in a long thread with many pages, especially if I?m sending the link to someone who is not a member of the Forum, but still wants to read something there.

For example, this is a link to something on a long challenge thread; I got the following links to the same thing:

(Link Type #1 ? if I?m logged onto the forum)
    http://boards.theforce.net/before_the_saga/b10475/19658520/p22/
(this does NOT take me to what I want to link to if I?m not logged on)

(Link Type #1 ? if I?m NOT logged onto the forum)
    http://boards.theforce.net/before_the_saga/b10475/19658520/p37
(this does NOT take me to what I want to link to if I am logged on)

    (Link Type #2)
    http://boards.theforce.net/Message.aspx?topic=19658520&brd=10475&start=23665331
(this link takes me to what I want to link to whether I?m logged on or not)

I get Link Type #1 when I click on the links on the Before the Saga web page.

I get Link Type #2 when I go to my user profile, then go to the listing of latest posts and then click on the post there.

    My questions are:
Why are there two different links for the same things?

Is there any other way to get Link Type #2 besides going to the user profile and clicking on the post that you want to link to?

The first type of link is in the newer format that is designed to help web crawlers pick up the pages and assign them to the correct search areas, and contains the board and topic numbers in it only which is treated in a specific way for the board to grab and create the page. The second form is the older format which explicitly states what page to create which is why you can link to specific posts.

There is no other fashion to be able to link to an individual post other than the "type 2" you have listed above.

In your link #1 examples where you get different results if you are logged on or not, it is caused by your Display settings. If you aren't logged on you get the default (25 posts/topics per page, I think). If your ID Display Settings have been changed to display more posts/topics per page, you will get different results when taking the link. You can find your settings under the Options section in the header in the Change Your Display Settings section.
If you look at the links, when you are logged on the link says to go to 'p22'. When you are not logged on it says to go to 'p37'. That's the page number.

Thanks for the explanations! I was hoping to find an easier way to find links to things, but it's at least nice to know how things work.
