Can you play cards only in a line, or can you put them on top of/below?

 

You can play them on top of/below, as long as the touching symbols match you can play a card anywhere.

I tried putting cards there, Cowgirl Jedi 1701, but it won't use the spaces.

 

Sometimes the boards want to use weird formatting, it's a little annoying. And usually requires some trial and error to get the cards where you want them to be.
