Not sure if you've seen this, but it's pretty exciting.

Hopefully we'll get some out in our area.

I somehow missed this post (ha, that was a pun). It would be fun to have one of those nearby. I might even have to costume up for a photo with it. :D

Look the website it up. Oh I'm going to be in Star Wars heaven at the post office, but I doubt where I work we will be getting a R2-D2 collection box.

I'm still trying to figure out how Saginaw is a well populated place. Royal Oak I understand. I just hope I can see this thing and take a photo with it. :D

There should be plenty of them out there, I seen pictures of them about month ago on line. Theres a few guys saying that they have out already here in the south. But I have not seen any yet here in Florida. Trust me as soon as I do its gonna be picture time.

Dont get to cold this week, sorry to hear you guys had some snow again this past week. It was pretty cool here today to. Well maybe we'll see some of you at Dragon Con this year.

Michigan has the r2 mailboxes. I'm not sure if they are still up, but we visited one in Grand Rapids (there are two there) and there is one in Royal Oak.

There's only one confirmed mailbox that was stolen, and that was on the east coast. Perhaps there have been more, but I haven't seen reports of it.

We actually have a ton in the metro area, folks: four in Royal Oak and five in Detroit. Google, as my co-workers like to say, is your friend. ;)

I haven't gone to the R.O. ones (I'm not fashionable enough for Royal Oak), but I have tracked down the Detroit ones. Check out my Flickr site:

There are shots of the R.O. floating around Flickr, too.

From what I understand the the mailboxes will be around until May 20 or so, just before the stamps actually go on sale.

    Thanks for that info!

A lot of people acutally believed what was posted on StarWars.com about where the mailboxes would be, hence the confusion (they only listed RO and Saginaw). You would think SW.com would want the rabid fans to flock to these things, with the "send in your photos" thing and all, so I don't get them not releasing better info on locations. :D

I checked Flickr when it was first posted but they had a bunch up in MI one day and the next they were gone. That was almost as confusing as SW.com not knowing what was going on. There has been so much confusion about these things. The postoffice web site stated that the boxes would only up for two to three weeks and now everyone is saying they will be up until May.

Since the mailboxes are decorated with decals, you gotta wonder what the point is of stealing one. ;)

I looked at the "official" list, too... and then looked on Flikr and noticed that there were 20-30% more locations than the official list had (I guess Evanston, MI has one, too... wherever Evanston is), so I knew it was something I would have to look around for. So that meant going back to Google.

What actually tipped me off on the locations was this Free Press blog post:

    http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070328/BLOG19/70327050

The author of the post helped me with more information than she had put in the posting.

Basically, for those in (or visiting) downtown Detroit, you can get to the four R2 locations easily (Woodward & Hancock is considered "midtown" and isn't on this route)... take the People Mover (looks like our post office folks thought this one out).

There is a downloadable map (PDF) of the route at

    http://www.thepeoplemover.com/resource/attach/3/stationguide2.pdf

Looking at that map, you want to stop at:

#2 The Michigan Station (Cass & Michigan R2)
#6 The Financial District Station (Congress & Griswold R2)
#9 The Bricktown Station (Lafayette & Beaubien R2)
#12 The Broadway Station (Grand River & Broadway R2)

It's $0.50 a ride, which means if you park at a meter for 90 or 120 minutes you're going to get away with being charged less than $5 to circle around downtown and get some shots of the little guy. My wife and I parked at the Greektown Casino and got our parking validated in the casino, so parking was free.

If you still want to get a shot of the midtown one for sake of completion, just jump back in your car and head north on Woodward. There are a ton of parking meters on Hancock, so you can just drop a quarter in one of those and grab your shot(s). A word of warning about the Midtown one: Don't park illegally around there - there is a police station across the street and the meter maids are fast...

    Enjoy!

And, if you are up in Lansing: 150 N Capitol Ave, Lansing, MI 48933

    Again - enjoy!

Me: I'm heading to Chicago on May 17. I'm hoping that some of their mailboxes will still be there. ;)
