Obviously R2 is in the movie, it wouldn't be a follow-on if the droids weren't in it.
They are what tie the trilogies together, it is the Saga seen by the droids over many years and adventures.

You really wanna know my thoughts? Well, since you asked.....

My thoughts are that this does not even remotely constitute news since there was never an inkling of chance we wouldn't be seeing R2-D2 back. So it's a cool picture but let's stop pretending it provides any sort of revelation.

 

Artoo was likely choosen as the first revealed returning cast cause of how good he is at keeping secrets. He knew Vader was Luke and Leia's father throughout the OT but never told them. I bet he'll never leak any plot details to reporters, he'll make Ford look open.



Not to mention he's a total trooper... I bet his talks to return went super quick.

 

Looks like a temporary stair case. You can clearly see the Scaffolding type structure holding something up.

Glad to see R2 is coming back, I was hoping he would. He's one of the few to have been in every movie so far. Hopefully R2's partner C-3PO will return as well. They're a team.

 

My greatest problem with this is how did they manage to post this at 7:00 AM on November 15th, 2013?

Has JJ Abrams created time travel to make Star Wars?

 

He looks a tad pristine for having survived two trilogies and who knows what else since ROTJ, but it's nice to see a familiar face.
