I was asked to ask this question on these boards by a friend who has just watched ep2 again and asked me why R2 has boosters and you never see them in OT.

    cheers for the reply.

    My speculation:

He'll use them again in Eps.III and will lose them.

According to the old Holonet News website (which is on the AOTC DVD), the warranty expired on the boosters before the OT.

First, you need a DVD-ROM drive. Enter the Disc 1 into the drive. Let it load with the InterActual Player. Press the stop button, and "Holonet News" should be one of the options on the next screen, along with "dvd.starwars.com" and "Return to the Main Menu".

Another way to get it is to insert Disc 1 into your DVD-ROM drive, and paste the following into the address bar of your webbrowser:
    file:///E:/common/win/holonet/index.htm
Replace "E:" with whatever letter your DVD-ROM drive is.

Plus...in the OT Artoo is somewhere around 50 years old. Maybe his boosters quit working or were removed.

Actually, he could easily have been older than that. We don't know how old he was in TPM.

One of Artoo's owners in between EP3 and ANH had the rockets removed.

The rebel forces didn't have enough money to afford repairing R2's rockets by the time of the OT. If he could roll along, then that's good enough for them.

Maybe he'll run out of rocket fuel in Episode III, while Anakin is usign him to jet to safety over a big volcano...

    Goddammit!

#Beats DVD player, PS2 and rusty old PCs with one another#

Why won't they talk to each other!

Does this mean that R2D2 has a serious overhaul along the way - he loses his rockets, his memory, anything else?

It's not that uncommon in the GFFA. Twenty years is a long time, and Artoo (and Threepio) had many different owners throughout that time.

Similarly to how eagerly R2 ran away from Luke and the Lars Homestead in ANH, R2 had a long history of running off on his own. His rocket propulsion system was disabled in an effort to limit his ability to run away.

Well if he had the rockets in Episode 4, 5 and 6 tell me when he should have used them.

    He never needed them!

Except in ANH when he could have flown to safety to escape the Jawas...
Or in ESB when he fell in the swamp...
Or in ROTJ when he fell of Jabba's barge...

Except in ANH when he could have flown to safety to escape the Jawas...

Exactly when between being blasted by the jawa and falling over unconscious would R2 have been able to open up the rocket area and turn them on?

Or in ESB when he fell in the swamp...

Are you sure his rockets would work in water?...

Or in ROTJ when he fell of Jabba's barge...

...Or work from a possition of being lodged in sand?

    >>>Exactly when between being blasted by the jawa and falling over unconscious would R2 have been able to open up the rocket area and turn them on?

Just before being blasted by the Jawa, when he realised that he was being stalked.

    >>>Are you sure his rockets would work in water?...

Probably not, but I imagine they would have worked after he had "unplugged" from the X-Wing and before he fall into the water.

    >>>...Or work from a possition of being lodged in sand?

Again, they probably would have worked fine before he pushed C3P0 off the barge and jumped off himself.

    Another couple of instances when he might have used his jets;

While Luke is levitating him on Dagobah and then drops him.

Immediately after cutting through the big net in ROTJ.
