I recall a point being made that Luke's old favourite stomping ground of Beggars Canyon was part of the Podrace circuit during the TPM era.

As in the Canyon Dune turn that the Tuskens camped out on?

Even thumbnailing it he went something less than 80 miles just measuring the blue line on the map. The Suns had not set so he had all evening, all night, and some potion of the morning as the Suns were already up. Keep in mind quite a bit of time could have passed between Owen's line "..or there'll be hell to pay" and Luke and 3po finding R2. If you allow a full 18 hours of travel and R2 moving at a brisk 3 mph then he could have gotten 54 miles which is not really that far off fromt he map.

Tolkein would be proud of the cartography.

Tolkein might be, but Tolkien would sadly shake his head at the deplorable cultus.

Despite it being Science Fantasy and needing no explanation.... He probably he rolled behind a sleeping Bantha, it farted hard and blew him several hundred miles towards the Jundland Wastes and from the sheer terror of the experience he could only hobble after by the time Luke and 3PO caught up with him.

This is probably as far as OT nerds go.

Mod edit: Beezer You've made your opinion of the EU abundantly clear with a sizeable proportion of your posting history. Drop it.

I just realised looking at the map that R2 was heading for ben's hut originally when leaving the pod. So when in flight was R2 controlling the pod and brought it down near to Ben's hut by design rather than a series of coincidental events?

Dude, it was a light hearted joke which was clearly meant to be good natured and get a chuckle out of people on both sides of the debate. Relax.

Given the irritation that your relentless attacks at virtually any mention of the EU tends to cause around here, it certainly wouldn't have gotten "a chuckle out of people on both sides of the debate".

I told you to drop it, unless you'd like a break from the boards.

The comment really wasn't meant to be antagonistic and I gladly apologize if that is how is was interpreted.

Luke was quite familiar with Beggar's Canyon, but he only wanted to take Obi-Wan as far as Anchorhead?

He said it himself, he was already late getting home at that point. Throw in the fact that he'd be arriving home at least sans Artoo, if not Threepio too, and you can see why he wouldn't want to test his uncle's patience.

You must be right, he still wanted to come home to his job for a little while later. Luke Skywalker must be a model employee. I'm sure that driving all the way to Beggar's Canyon was some of the wasting time with his friends which Owen had mentioned. Also he probably wanted to stop over in Anchorhead to pick up those power converters after-all.

However if it had gone down that Luke had only took Ben as far as Anchorhead. I think Luke would have forfeited over Artoo to Obi-Wan. Threepio would be way too loyal to Luke and too fed up with R2-D2 that he would have stayed with Luke.

Artoo can move fast if he needs to. We glimpsed as much when he outran the battle droids on his way to unlock the ray shields on the Invisible Hand.

The map is pretty neat to look at, but I do wonder why Luke and Obi-Wan had to rest for the night on their way to Mos Eisley when, it was shown that Luke could make a quick roundtrip to the Lars Homestead and back after the Sandtroopers attacked.

It could have been just about to get dark by the time Luke got back to the sandcrawler. Probably not wise to travel out in the open on Tatooine past sunset, even in a landspeeder.
